Dallas, TX, August 16: The multi-billion dollar
Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), located south of Dallas,
Texas and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, will see new
life as a high-tech, secure data center. Collider Data Center
LLC, a Dallas-based company, along with investment partner J.B.
Hunt, has purchased 135-acres, 215,000 square feet of buildings,
and access to over 17 miles of rock and concrete encased tunnels
250 feet beneath the Earth's surface.
Currently, there are no Tier IV data centers available in the
United States that can meet the needs and demands of the data
center industry, however, the SSC is ideal for these
applications.
"Tier IV data centers are classified as the most redundant
and exclusive data centers in the world," said Bryan Loewen,
Director of Mission Critical Connect, a specialized unit within
Dallas-based commercial real estate firm GVA Cawley. "The demand
in the U.S. for these types of facilities far outweighs the
current supply, and this facility provides the necessary power
and high-tech infrastructure needed to support this industry."
A number of government agencies and major corporations
operate Tier IV data centers, including credit reporting
agencies, critical components of the U.S. government, banking
institutions and major disaster recovery centers, to name a few.
GVA Cawley is marketing the facility to entities that need to
ensure high data and facility security in a post 9/11
environment.
"With the current heightened global security threats, the
demand for secure Tier IV data storage has increased
exponentially, and with the acquisition of the Super Collider
site and its robust infrastructure, we are able to offer
high-end secure data center users an immediate and unique
opportunity," said Roger Gaskins, principal of Collider Data
Center LLC.
A feasibility study on the former SSC infrastructure was
performed by a third party, data center engineering firm.
Additionally, Dr. Vern Francis and a team of graduating MBA
students from the University of Dallas conducted a semester long
study on the SSC. Both entities found the SSC facility and its
location to be a hidden jewel for developing a high-end data
center.
