The City Council

The role and purview of the City Council is to govern the City of Reykjavik in accordance with the provisions of the laws on municipalities and of other laws.

The City Council decides on the allocation of the city’s income and the implementation of the projects undertaken by the municipality. It is to oversee that the provisions of the laws on municipalities and the regulations and resolutions of the City of Reykjavik are being observed. Furthermore, the City Council can pass a resolution on whatever subject that it considers to be of concern to the City of Reykjavik.

The City Council has some fifteen councillors and an equal number of substitutes elected by those residents of Reykjavik that have voting rights. The term of the City Council is four years.

Regular meetings of the City Council are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the City Hall starting at 2.00 pm. The meetings of the City Council are open to the general public unless otherwise decided. It is permissible to cancel meetings for up to two months in the summer.

The mayor is the general manager of the City of Reykjavik. Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir was elected mayor at a City Council meeting on August 21st, 2008.
