About Campaign 07 - 07 – 07

The Joint Working Group [JWG] hosted an Emergency Planning Meeting on 18th July at the Women’s Goal at Constitutional Hill where an alliance of 15 organisations was established to embark on a campaign against hate crime against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people with a focus for now on lesbians.

This Coalition will shortly launch an anti hate crime campaign, named Campaign 07 – 07 – 07, the date of the murders. The Campaign has five functional areas:

Legal and lobbying:

Monitoring the criminal investigation of this case and later, the court case; consideration of a friends of the court application when the case comes to court; supporting the family in decision making through the process; following up on past hate crime against lesbian women, including murder and rape; securing higher levels of political leadership as well as religious and traditional leadership on this issue.

This area of work is led by People Opposing Women Abuse [POWA] and Centre for Applied Legal Studies [CALS]

Community mobilization and direct action:

Consciousness raising and engaging local communities in an ongoing dialogue about the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people; engaging religious and traditional leaders and institutions on these rights and their roles; organizing protests and solidarity marches, pickets and other forms of  mass action to popularize the messages and galvanise support and solidarity for the issues and our claims.

This area of work is led by Positive Women’s Network   [PWN] and the AIDS Consortium

Building solidarity:

Working with local, national and international organizations who support the issue, human rights, women’s rights and/or the rights of LGBTi people to obtain support; strengthening lobbying from international spaces; deepening understanding of the realities and rights of LGBTi people andlesbians in particular; mobilizing skills, labour, finances, infrastructure, and other resources

This area of work is led by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women [FEW]

Media and communications:

Developing and disseminating campaign messages; communicating with and updating the public, the human rights and LGBTi community  and the growing alliance.

This area of work is led by Behind the Mask [BTM]

Research And Documentation:

Collating existing information, documentation and research from various organizations; conducting a desk review on hate crimes and those specifically dealing with the LGBTi community; ensuring this case and the campaign in particular are well documented; analyzing and articulating positions related to the case and these crimes and to the criminal and court processes as well as hate crimes legislation

This area of work is led by OUT and Gay and Lesbian Archives [GALA]
