Nikunau

Nikunau, Gilbert Islands

The 18 km² Nikunau, located 41 km east from Beru, is a low coral island consisting of two lobes connected that are connected via a narrow isthmus. The island is surrounded by a narrow fringing reef, with a reef flat that broadens on the eastern side. Within the islands' interior are several small, landlocked, hypersaline lagoons. Nikunau is heavily vegetated with Coconut Palm and Pandanus.
