New association gives voice to Europe’s small towns

22.03.2011 - A new European grouping – the Confederation of Small Towns and Municipalities of the European Union (CTME) – was officially launched in Brussels on 15 February 2011. Future of new Dublin mayor thrown into doubt by political uncertainty

25.11.2010 - The current political uncertainty in Ireland could jeopardise plans to create the first directly elected mayor for the Dublin region. Legislation paving the way for the direct elections was introduced by John Gormley TD, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government on 15 October. But the minister, who is also the leader of the Irish Green Party, the junior partner in the ruling coalition in Ireland, has called for elections early in the new year meaning that it is highly unlikely that the legislation will be approved in time.

European Entrepreneurial Region Kerry, Ireland, prepares for European fact-finding visit

29.09.2010 - Last February, Kerry was awarded the prestigious label of European Entrepreneurial Region (EER) of the Year 2011. This autumn, the EER Jury travels to Ireland in order to assess the progress made by Kerry with regard to the preparation of its "EER action plan".

The OPEN DAYS come to UK and Ireland

07.09.2010 - The OPEN DAYS European Week of Regions and Cities is a well-established feature on the Brussels institutional calendar, but for the past few years the event has become increasingly well-known in the regions and cities of Europe as well. In the UK, there are 23 events being held during the months of September and October, from Aberdeen to Truro and Belfast to Cardiff, via London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, among others. In Ireland, there will be four local events in Dublin (two events), Wexford and Galway.

Cork project shortlisted for European Enterprise Awards 2010

17.03.2010 - The Genesis Enterprise Programme (GEP) from Cork, Ireland, has been shortlisted for this year’s European Enterprise Awards (EEA). The initiative has been run by the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) since 1998 and brings together regional and national partners. Every year it provides a package of support measures to 18 entrepreneurs in south-west Ireland to accelerate the development of their businesses during their first 12 months in operation. Eligible projects have to be knowledge-based and to show export potential. Until 2008, almost 4 out of 5 participants were still active, employing over 1100 persons. This approach has now been replicated successfully elsewhere in Ireland

County Kerry wins European Entrepreneurial Region award

26.02.2010 - County Kerry has been awarded the prestigious title of European Entrepreneurial Region of the Year 2011 by the Committee of the Regions, one of six EU regions granted the label for 2011 and 2012. Kerry's successful bid came from the Institute of Technology, Tralee and Shannon Development, who share a joint campus at Kerry Technology Park. The quality, efficacy and long-term success of its entrepreneurial vision were the decisive factors in Kerry's winning bid.

New Irish delegation takes up work in EU regional and local assembly

02.02.2010 - For the next five years, nine elected representatives will be the voice of Ireland's local and regional authorities in Brussels. On 9 February, they will take up their work as members of the Committee of the Regions (CoR), the EU's assembly of regional and local representatives, with Cllr. Patrick McGowan, member of Donegal county council, as head of their national delegation.

Local events will be organised by each OPEN DAYS partner region/city, as well as by other associations and organisations, under the label "Europe in our Region/City".
