:: A Note from David Johnson:

... from an e-mail communication to e-newsletter community subscribers:

Is Johnson's Russia List free?

Yes and no. There is no charge or subscription fee to receive JRL. We are able to bring you such a broad range of content because JRL is a project of a non-profit research and educational institution ... Nobody is making a profit on this service, and it takes an enormous amount of time, and some money, to provide this unique service to you every day.

It is my pleasure to do this, and I am extraordinarily gratified to hear from Russia-watchers around the world that they find JRL to be a timely, comprehensive, and very valuable resource.

Over the past 10 years nearly all the financial support for JRL has come from the Center for Defense Information (now the World Security Institute) and the Carnegie Corporation. JRL would not have survived and prospered without this indispensable support. That era, however, is ending. From this point forward most of the support for JRL must come from those who actually use and value it -- the recipients.

Currently, only a small minority of all JRL recipients support the publication; to those of you who have already given this year — THANK YOU! I appeal to those that have not done so to help keep us in business. A gift from all will keep us on solid footing.

There are several very practical benefits of contributing:

:: You keep JRL operating;
:: You likely receive a tax deduction;
:: I have a tendency to give preference to your technical problems

So please, today, make your gift if you have not already done so. I would suggest a contribution of $50. $25 if your resources are quite limited (i.e., students). Those who find special value in JRL should contribute more. Remember, JRL comes to you almost every day, including on the weekend. It is a huge bargain!

If you have any questions or comments please let me know. Please do NOT make checks out to me.

The World Security Institute (WSI) is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Gifts to WSI are tax deductible, as allowed by law. WSI receives no funds from the military or from military contractors. The Institute is financed by voluntary tax-deductible contributions from individuals and grants from foundations.
