A member of the remote East Group of atolls, Reao is located 49 km southeast from Pukarua. The entire eastern rim of the atoll is topped by a single elongate motu that curves around the eastern and western extremeties of the atoll. In contrast, the western rim comprises over 100 tiny islets that are separated from one another by sand patches, drying reef, spillways and hoa.
