What is the Urban Audit?
Following a pilot project for the collection of comparable statistics and indicators
for European cities the first full-scale European Urban Audit took place in 2003,
for the then 15 countries of the European Union. In 2004 the project was extended
to the 10 new Member States plus Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. Under Eurostat coordination,
the work of the Urban Audit involves all national statistical offices as well as
some of the cities themselves.
The second full-scale Urban Audit took place between 2006 and 2007, and involved
321 European cities in the 27 countries of the European Union, along with 36 additional
cities in Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.
Data collection currently takes place every three years, but an annual data collection
is being planned for a smaller number of targeted variables.

News on the launch of the Urban Atlas - providing cities with tools for monitoring,
spatial analysis, planning and development |
Big or small, cities need reliable and comparable information for urban planning
and for their safe, sustainable and prosperous development. This year, 185 cities
from all 27 countries of the European Union will benefit from the "Urban Atlas",
which is being produced by the European Commission in collaboration with the Member
States and with the support of the European space industry.
The Urban Atlas will provide detailed and cost-effective digital mapping, ensuring
that city planners have the most up-to-date and accurate data available on land
use and land cover, offering new tools to assess risks and opportunities, ranging
from threat of flooding and impact of climate change, to identifying new infrastructure
and public transport needs. All cities in the EU will be covered by the Urban Atlas
by 2011.

yet with 2004 data. Concerning previous reference years, it presents an overall
profile of the selected city based on a selection of indicators across domains.
The profiles include the city, LUZ and sub-city levels (where available) and can
be downloaded as a PDF document. The selection criteria of this application are
country and city. |
|
How do the cities rank?: This application shows how cities
within a selected group rank for a particular indicator. The selection
criteria on this application include: domain; indicator; group; display order; and
year. |
|
How does your city compare?: This application shows the
position of a selected city or larger urban zone within a selected group(s) of cities
for up to four indicators. The selection criteria on this application include: city
or larger urban zone; indicators; group; and year. |
|
What is the structure of the city?: This application
displays the score of selected indicators across the various spatial levels of the
city. The selection criteria on this application include: city; year; and
indicators. |
|
Data that can be accessed: This application allows
the downloading of datasets for up to six indicators in various formats including
