The good: Rugged, portable, and inexpensive for a USB drive; extra labeling kit and software.
The bad: No Mac software; CD-mastering software cannot create an image or write discs from images.
The bottom line: If you want a sturdy, external CD-RW drive, the HP CD Writer 8230e is affordable and offers a lot of bells and whistles.

The good: Rugged; portable; parallel port and USB connectivity extend compatibility to DOS, Windows 95 and NT 4.0 (which don't support USB).
The bad: No Mac software or blank media.
The bottom line: In a mixed shop of legacy PCs and newer systems, the Backpack can be a valuable shared resource. But you'll need to update its software if you want it to work reliably.
