VLADIMIR PUTIN THANKED BERLINERS FOR THEIR BEFITTING AND RESPECTFUL ATTITUDE TO SOVIET SOLDIERS' GRAVES

On Tuesday President Putin of Russia expressed gratitude to the municipal authorities of Berlin, to the Berliners and all Germans for "the befitting and respectful attitude to Soviet soldiers' graves," reports the RIA Novosti correspondent.
"Today I had another chance to see this for myself, when Gerhard Schroeder and I placed wreaths at the monument to Soviet soldiers in Tiergarten in downtown Berlin," said Vladimir Putin to Berlin burgomaster Klaus Wowereit and representatives of the public. Among those present were, in particular, former Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and former Foreign Minister Hans Dietrich Genscher.
President Putin stressed that he is "sincerely happy to be again in Berlin, a city that has "retained its grandeur and historical roots." He said that despite all the trials that fell to its lot Berlin has remained "faithful to the traditions of love of freedom." Now, went on Vladimir Putin, Berlin is by right called Europe's biggest construction site. "I have seen this myself from aboard the helicopter that was taking me to our meeting with the President today," he stressed. The head of the Russian state recalled that he has many friends in Berlin whom he knows since the time when he worked in St. Petersburg.
Vladimir Putin said that Berlin is turning into one of the biggest political and business centres of the world. It is a city where people can live and work comfortably, he said.
The President said that "equitable, well-balanced and truly European relations" are coming into being between Russia and Germany. In this connection, regional cooperation, and all the more so cooperation between capitals acquires very great importance," said Vladimir Putin. He recalled at the same time that the tenth anniversary of the partnership of the two capitals was marked last August.

PANTELIS BOUKALAS: THE GLOBE'S EIGHT DOGES
The gun was raised and it killed, legitimately. And then came a second assassination, as the jeep ran over the dead body (in ancient times, the victor would drag the dead person with his chariot) to confirm that the dead who belong to this class have the same rights that they had when they were still alive- none. The eight self-styled doges of the planet, however, "expressed their grief," despite the fact that they had "more important things to deal with" as Tony Blair, the politician furthest to the left, put it.
