Music is frequently a means to convey great joy or sorrow. As its own unique language, it can be the only way to express the emotions which are often thrust upon us. The Cleveland Institute of Music joins with millions around the world in trying to make sense of the horror the terrorist-perpetrated events brought to the U.S., and the world, on September 11, 2001. In the weeks and months ahead, we shall all, in private and communal ways, seek the truth and come to terms with what has happened. More than anything, we seek a healing path amidst the chaos.

As ambassadors of music, we would like to offer a guide to help find solace in the power of music. This Listening Guide has been created to share the music many of us turn to in times of trouble, and for inspiration. In times of stress, we seek something bigger, something to which everyone can relate in their own way. We turn to music to express what words often cannot.

Many of these great pieces you may already own, but perhaps you've not listened to them in a while. Some may be new to you and provide an opportunity to add to your collection.

At CIM, we plan to "hug our music" even more closely and use its restorative powers to cope with this tragedy, and perhaps others that may come our way. We hope you, too, will find beauty and comfort in them.
