Dennis Griffiths
Fleet Street – Five Hundred Years of the Press
Dennis
Griffiths will talk about his new book Fleet Street - Five Hundred
Years of the Press.
An entertaining and authoritative guide to the history of the Press
in London, from its earliest days in the late 15th century through
to the relaunch of The Guardian in 2005. Political opinion,
commercial opportunism, technological advances, price wars, satisfying
the thirst for news, the influence of editors, great feature writers,
gossip columnists, advertising campaigns, the invention of the cartoon
strip and crosswords, the power of the Press Barons, and then the
breaking of the power of the unions - all contribute to the story
that Griffiths weaves so expertly.

100 Years of the Best Journalism by Women

Frank Gardner: Blood and Sand - Reporting from the front line
Frank
Gardner talks about a journey that began 25 years ago with a chance
meeting on a London bus with the veteran Arabian explorer, Sir Wilfred
Thesiger, who inspired what would become Gardner 's lifelong passion
for the Arab world. This abiding interest would lead him to travel
throughout the Middle East, experiencing at first hand peoples,
places and cultures that few have encountered. It's a journey that
would eventually lead, via the world of banking, to becoming a journalist
with the BBC. And it was this passion that would, in the wake of
the world-changing events of 9/11, send him on the journey that
came to dominate - and very nearly end - his life: his coverage
of the phenomenon that is Al-Qaeda.

Front Page Goes Regional
The Front Page exhibition is so good that we want to share it!
Over 80 libraries and local study centres across the UK are holding
exhibitions, talks and workshops based on themes taken from the
exhibition at the British Library this summer.
Regional newspaper archives hold a wealth of information about
your local area and the people that lived there. Yesterday’s
papers can help you to find out more about your ancestors, your
local sports team, local celebrities, celebrations or disasters
and more. You can hunt out that picture from your school play that
was in print all those years ago.
See your local press, visit your local library or check out the
list of venues
hosting Front Page regional activities to see what’s happening
where you are (more venues will be included later).
If you work in a library or local study centre and would like to
find out more about the resources available to you, please contact
us.
