Exit Survey

The Tourism Victoria Exit Survey is a research initiative of Tourism Victoria’s. The data collected provides visitor market information for use by Tourism Victoria and its industry members for making business and marketing decisions.

The multi-page survey is administered five times a year, using a quota sample intercept methodology, at the Swartz Bay BC Ferries terminal, the Victoria International Airport, and Clipper Navigation. Three visitor publics are targeted: rubber tire (at Swartz Bay), air travel (at the Airport), and foot passengers (on the Clipper).

Due to the random-intercept methodology, study results can be generalized to the population of visitors within each of the rubber tire, air travel, and foot passenger segments. Use of sample quotas, however, suggests that some caution is needed in drawing conclusions about the population of visitors as a whole. Relative quota sizes are generally consistent with previous implementations of the Exit Survey, allowing comparison across years within each season. The sample sizes, however, may not accurately reflect the relative proportions of visitors using each mode of transportation to the Island, as these figures are currently not available.

Result descriptions are purposefully kept short as different readers will have different interests and may have different interpretations of the findings.
