As we race along in our quest to create a normal society, we have too quickly forgotten how we got here. We have lived through a heady decade. Three elections, three cabinets, two presidents, a freshly hewn constitution, thousands of new acts of parliament and the first flickerings of economic transformation. And the most precious achievement of all - peace.

A mere 10 years ago, none of this seemed probable. The exhilaration as icons of freedom walked from prison and returned from abroad was mixed with anxiety and uncertainty.

This 10th anniversary provides the perfect occasion for reflection. We have produced this celebratory edition of the FM to recall events and piece together the stories of how, as a country, we were led from the precipice. Some of the narrative is provided by the men and women who made history by displaying extraordinary vision and courage in those difficult days. We pay tribute to those who provided us with the mantle of democracy we now wear with little thought as to how it was woven. And we analyse the debates that preoccupied our infant democracy.
