In the south of Germany, around 1230, somebody copied Hildegard’s Revelations and illustrated her visions with some magnificent miniatures. One of these, 27 x 17 cm., is reproduced on the front cover.
On the bottom left of the mandala we see Hildegard of Bingen sitting at her desk. She is writing one of her visions, of the apparition of the Son of God.
He appears as a red figure whose body constitutes the entire universe, surrounded by fire. The 12 animal heads represent the winds, and at the center of the universe is man.
