STAFF EDITORIAL: IRA fee a sham

Today, students are gathering to protest the Instructionally Related Activity Fee increase. The administration responsible for this fee has a choice. It can choose to ignore the student body and dismiss our opposition to this measure or it can choose to acknowledge our legitimate protests and modify or eliminate the fee altogether. Based on the methods initially used to introduce the fee, the former seems to be the most likely outcome, but we can always hope the administration will do what’s right. Full story

Many of our readers may, quite understandably, have questioned the intentions of The Daily Aztec in recent weeks. The torrent of depressing events occurring on campus, which inevitably find their way to the front page, might give some the impression that our mission is to tarnish the reputation of San Diego State. We are aware that by exposing controversial events instead of blissfully ignoring them, we open ourselves and our university up to criticism. Regardless, The Daily Aztec remains committed to providing truth and transparency wherever we find it. Full story

The recent arrest of Associated Students President James Poet, especially so soon after the much-publicized drug bust last spring, has hit San Diego State with a vengeance. Poet is the public face of the student body; he very much represents SDSU students in the mind of the community. His actions, intentional or not, fairly or not, are reflected upon all of us. STAFF EDITORIAL: Congress sinks rescue package

Americans have been watching the news desperately, biting their nails as they watch the economy crumbling around them. Business owners, parents and the middle class are holding on tight to their pocketbooks and watching in horror as the massive $700 billion bailout bill is shoveled around Congress. For most college students, this is no make or break issue, unless their loved ones are losing a house. Students couldn't be more wrong. Or more ignorant. Full story
