2001 – Pedro Depestre Gonzales, 55, of the Buena Vista Social Club dies after performing at a concert in Basel, Switzerland.

2001 – Van Stephenson, a former member of the country group BlackHawk, dies of melanoma at his Nashville-area home. He is 47.

1997 – Songwriter Laura Nyro dies of cancer in Danbury, Conn., at the age of 49.

1996 – Bluesman Roosevelt “Booba” Barnes dies of cancer in Chicago at the age of 59.

1994 – Kurt Cobain of Nirvana is found dead in his home in Seattle of an apparently self-inflicted shotgun wound. Cobain, 27, is estimated to have committed suicide three days earlier.
