Paul Reitz focuses on the boys of New York City for his new photo book, a collection of men he calls "true beauties."

Paul Reitz has lived and worked in New York City for 23 years, and he has 25 years of professional experience in shooting dramatic images of men, with an emphasis on body and an editorial style. He is sought by the leading male model agencies and by new faces alike, to provide his own vision of contemporary male beauty.

Interested in photography from a very early age, he honed his skills while studying the medium in college, both from journalistic and artistic approaches. A common thread throughout his work is the simple elegance that emanates from his relaxed shooting atmosphere, allowing an uncanny connection with his subjects. His book Boys in the City will be available via BrunoGmuender.com in July.

Why are you a photographer?
I have to shoot. If I haven't in several days, it starts gnawing at me, and I have to get those creative juices flowing. I'll take a break for a week or so sometimes and am always excited to start shooting again. On a more philosophical level, I want to show the world that men are beautiful. I wasn't taught that, and most of us aren't.

What catches your eye?
A true beauty. Men who have a confident, easy sensual appeal. Often there can be one signature thing that sets them apart, takes your breath away when you pass them on the street, whether it's the eyes, the body, exotic features.

How do you choose your subjects?
I look for different men at different times. I often like to work with new faces that have that something special, and give them my vision of them. Or I will get inspired to give someone something new and unexpected, if I feel they are playing it too safe. For this book there has been a concentration on younger men in an urban environment.

How do you describe your work?
I depict beautiful, masculine men in a simple and relaxed sensuality.

What makes a good photograph to you?
An image that people can connect to ... and that creates desire. I try not to be too overt and to beat people over the head with the "story" in each shot. I want to allow the viewer to bring enough of their own sensuality to the experience, and in the end I hope the image would have more broad appeal.

Who are your favorite artists? And why?

Jenny Holzer, for the way she uses the power of language and ideas in a visual manner. Steven Klein, for creating images that have balls. John Waters, for being John Waters. And the late Luke Smalley, for toying with Americana and tradition in his images of men.

Paul Reitz photos reminds me of an old man photographing hot young guys"beauties" and putting them into stagnant B movie poses. I guess that's cool if you get off on that sort of thing, but that lurid fakey lens that he uses to capture these guys leaves a lot to be desired in the current vernacular. Instead of New York beauties, maybe it should have been NY Beauty Queens.

I think that you're forgetting (or willfully ignoring) that in our world, unfortunately there still exists many racial prejudices; racial prejudices that these series of photos seem to support, especially when the photographer decides to label the whole project as "true beauties" and then shows a completely white array of models. Growing up, many minorities are told that they aren't beautiful because their skin isn't light enough, their hair isn't straight enough, or their eyes are too slanted. Which is why I find your comment as equally minimizing as the one below. So, you asked, what's wrong with White men re-enforcing the notion that only White men are beautiful? Absolutely everything. And yes, I do find it equally disgusting when other races to do it as well: when they only post pictures of their own races as the only examples of beauty. Because instead of building a collective humanity, we've, yet again, drawn lines around ourselves.

"I think on-stage nudity is disgusting, shameful and damaging to all things American. But if I were 22 with a great body, it would be artistic, tasteful, patriotic and a progressive religious experience." Shelley Winters I love that quote, seemed appropriate. I think the human form is a beautiful thing. I don't see why we all get hung up on nudity. Being naked and being a "whore" are not synonymous...

@ J. Bocca - 1) Yes, it is just as highly disturbing to see nothing but men of color being praised as "beautiful" among minorities. In fact, I find it more disturbing than this. 2) Being gay has NOTHING to do with "personal preference" and everything to do with who one is. More importantly, you can't compare that to having racial preferences. You're born gay; you aren't born preferring one race more than any other.

Why is it a crime for a WHITE male, to find beauty in WHITE MEN??!?!? Would you criticize a black woman for finding beauty in other black woman? Also isn't personal preference, the very essence in which gay people fight daily to obtain the dignity to express, something that shouldn’t be criticized? I highly doubt this argument would occur on a black/Asian forum where nearly 100% of all their models are of the same race. I will never understand why minorities get so angry at the thought of white people displaying white beauty yet their ethnic counterparts do the same thing and no one blinks an eye.

Surprise, surprise. A soft-core collection of pornographic images featuring white men. LMAO @ "true beauties." Let's just call it what it is: whores and the photographers who love them.
