Parks Management

Greetings,

This is an exciting and challenging time for Montana's state parks. We are seeing an increase in visitation as more Montanans choose to do their recreating close to home. Similarly, natural wonders like Lewis & Clark Caverns and historic landmarks like Bannack ghost town attract people from throughout the country and beyond. We have some incredible resources, a talented and service-oriented staff, and an appreciative public to serve.

At the same time, as the agency charged with maintaining all of these wonderful places, we have to come to terms with how to pay for their upkeep. We have to raise additional revenue if we are to continue meeting the expectations of our visitors. People appreciate the clean restrooms and campgrounds they find at state parks. They expect us to be good stewards of these special places.

As the administrator for this program, I am very interested in hearing your ideas on how to improve the Montana State Park system. I also encourage each of you to provide input to the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission as it considers changes to the biennial fee rule.

Fees are an important component of the state park budget. This is a good opportunity for people to provide input on these fees and help determine the appropriate amount that will enable Montana to carry forward and improve its state park legacy.
