Coming soon: "Educating Rita"
The story of "Educating Rita" is one of those be-careful-what-you-wish-for stories that take an audience on the journey of a personal search for a place in this world.
It's the story of a young, strait-laced student who goes to work for an alcoholic, bohemian professor and how their relationship has a dramatic impact on each of their lives. It was a wonderful movie with Michael Caine and Julie Waters just 30 years ago.
Renaissance Theaterworks opens a production of the play. Directed by the talented Julie Swenson, the play features two actors from the prestigious American Players Theatre in Spring Green: Jonathan Smoots and Christina Panfillio.
Opening night is Saturday, Jan. 19 and the play runs through Feb. 10.

Whereas "Inherit the Wind" delivered its debate with heft and unbridled passion, "How the World Began" takes a much quieter approach to the discussion, focusing on just three normal people who become embroiled in both sides of the issue. It's "science versus religion" portrayed in a quieter way than you might expect, but no less fierce.

The UWM grad is one of the country's top sound designers and a man who knows how to create the sounds that make a theater visit memorable.

Proposal for referendum on county board future gives people a voice

A former county supervisor who is now in the state Assembly has legislation that would give voters in the county the right to determine whether the board should be smaller, poorer and meet less frequently. Needless to say, the reaction from County Board members is one of horror at the thought that they might lose their $50,000 a year jobs and their ability to strike fear into the hearts of thousands of county employees by micromanaging their departments and their tasks.
"Memphis" gets under your skin

It doesn't take long for the cast of "Memphis" to let you know what the show is all about. Almost the very first lyrics sung by the smooth-talking Delray set the whole evening up clearly. From that point on the Tony Award-winning musical "Memphis," which opened a week-long run last night at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, gets under your skin and into your blood in the way few plays, much less musicals, ever do.

It's been over 30 years since I covered the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, and I made my return trip for Saturday's NFC Wild Card contest where the Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings, 24-10. So much has changed over that time, from the stadium itself, the reporters and the disappearance of flying hot dogs.
