1. "Condom Pope" portrait rolls out for the public
"Eggs Benedict," a portrait of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI that's made from 17,000 condoms, was installed at Portrait Society Gallery. It will be on display starting Thursday, April 11. The opening reception is from 6 to 9 p.m.
2. "Archer Live" sloppy but fun
"Archer Live" was a fun, but disjointed show over the course of its 90-minute running time. While it was fun to see the voices of these characters performed live, there was a lack of organization that was a bit of a disappointment with tickets costing $35-$45 each. Still, that same chaos allowed for some of the funniest moments of the evening, but for fans looking for a more in-depth look at the show, they were left in the cold in favor of the party atmosphere.
3. Aisha Tyler talks "Archer" in Milwaukee and more
I'm super excited for Saturday's "Archer Live," the in-person incarnation of the hit FX show that blows me away every week. I'll just throw it out there: "Archer," the animated spy comedy is not only the funniest show on TV now, but it ranks among the funniest shows of all time. Filthy, witty and beautifully drawn, it packs an amazing amount of comedy into every episode. In advance of the show, I spoke to Aisha Tyler (Lana Kane) by phone.
4. Asner's Milwaukee appearance canceled
Ed Asner's solo performance of "FDR" scheduled for this weekend has been canceled. Asner was recently hospitalized for exhaustion.
5. A conversation with Ralphie May
Ralphie May is performing at The Pabst Theater this Saturday, March 16. OnMilwaukee.com caught up with him on the road to talk candidly about his family, his comedy and why he doesn't want to be part of the "in crowd."
6. Will a once-sticky Art Museum tradition now fade away?
When folks would leave the museum, often they'd slap their sticker onto one of a couple light posts along Lincoln Memorial Drive, near the northerly entrance to Art Museum Drive. The poles have, consequently, been practically wallpapered with stickers from ground level up to a level just out of arm's reach for humans of average height. But now that tradition may begin to diminish as quickly as the blue decoration on the old stickers has faded in the sun.
7. Art Museum and War Memorial reach agreement
The Milwaukee Art Museum and Milwaukee County War Memorial, Inc. reached an agreement regarding the ongoing management of the buildings and grounds that they both occupy - a agreement based on a term sheet finalized by negotiators for both teams last week.
8. Schumer's star eclipsed by opening act
Usually at any concert the opening act is designed to serve as a solid appetizer to get the audience settled in for the headline performer. This was not the case at The Pabst Theater on Saturday night as Amy Schumer's opener Bridget Everett was a supernova that made Schumer's set feel like a post-dinner piece of hard candy.
9. Burr brings the funny to The Pabst
It's a pretty rare accomplishment for a stand-up comedian to receive a standing ovation from half the audience before telling a single joke, but Bill Burr managed to get such a response before starting his sold out late show at the Pabst Theater Friday night. Constantly touring, Burr has proved to be one of the most prolific stand-up comedians currently working.
10. Milwaukee Ballet announces 2013-14 season
The Milwaukee Ballet announced its 2013-14 season today.
11. OnMilwaukee.com skyline design now available
Based on popular demand, the footer of the OnMilwaukee.com home page is now available as a 9x24-inch print. It was created by OnMilwaukee.co designer, Jason McDowell.
12. Milchman pulls you in with "Cover of Snow"
Novels like Jenny Milchman's "Cover of Snow" prove that there's still no better way to pass an afternoon than lying on your couch, elbows-deep in a good mystery story.
13. Tame Impala caters to college atmosphere
For the most part, Tame Impala isn't a very flashy band. Kevin Parker hardly makes any sudden movements except for some slight arm swaying and holding his guitar up to the sky as if he's succumbing to the resonance he just unleashed on the crowd. Stage presence aside, it's all made up with the simple but fitting oscilloscope styled visuals and stage lighting which erupted in color with every sonic melody played by the band. Had you been anything else but sober, you could've probably seen the waves bursting from Parker's guitar.
14. John Mulaney delivers big laughs at Turner Hall Ballroom
John Mulaney might have been new to performing in Milwaukee, but his show on Saturday night at Turner Hall highlighted why he is one of the best stand-up comedians working today.
15. Lord of the Dance offers fancy footwork this Friday
More than 60 million people from 68 countries have seen Lord of the Dance, an Irish dance show created by Michael Flatley, and it's coming to the Milwaukee Theatre on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
16. Nick Offerman offers a night of storytelling and song
On Saturday night, "Parks and Recreation's" Nick Offerman (the actor behind the show's amazing character Ron Swanson) appeared at the Pabst Theater in front of a full house not exactly sure what they were about to get. Luckily, their instincts to come were rewarded with a terrific night of storytelling and song.
17. Ferguson's comedy is better on TV
While he may have been performing in a primetime spot, the host of "The Late Late Show" Craig Ferguson was certainly not any cleaner at his Friday night performance at the Pabst Theater.
18. They came, they saw, they boogied
They came, they saw, they boogied. Nobody broke the record for the longest "Soul Train" dance line at Potawatomi Casino Thursday, but they had a good time trying.
19. "The Last Romance" doesn't satisfy
Can a really good play can overcome weak acting to make a satisfying night at the theater? The answer to that is, unquestionably, "no."
20. Milwaukee Air & Water Show announces dates and headliner
The Milwaukee Air & Water Show will take place this year on the weekend of Aug. 3-4, it was announced today. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds - celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2013 - will headline the show.
21. Young performers surprise in DHS production of "Phantom of the Opera"
I want to make something very clear, right from the start. I'm not saying that Dominican High School's production of "Phantom of the Opera" was a great production for a high school. This was a great production.
22. Coming soon: "Underneath the Lintel"
One of the most interesting mysteries I've ever seen, "Underneath the Lintel" opens Feb. 20 at the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre - and it should be a hot ticket in Milwaukee.
23. Coming soon: "A Time to Live"
About the only theater company in town that gives regular performances of works by local playwrights is tiny Windfall Theatre, and it is at it again. The company will present "A Time to Live" by Milwaukee playwright and actor Howard Goldstein, opening Feb. 15 and running through March 2.
24. Laughing at racism
Everyone can agree: race - and racism - is one touchy subject. With "Clybourne Park," the Milwaukee Rep tackles the issue in an unconventional way: with comedy. Gerard Neugent sits down with OnMilwaukee.com to discuss the power of comedy to create dialogue within the community.
25. Coming soon: "Pinkalicious: The Musical"
There is a group of young girls who have fallen in love with another young girl who can't get enough of the color pink in her life. It is, of course, "Pinkalicious," the minor phenomenon you can hardly avoid if you have a young girl in your life. And now you have a chance to see her action. First Stage Children's Theatre presents "Pinkalicious: The Musical" Feb. 22 through March 24.
