White minority attacked and dispossessed | Mugabe uses racism and brutality to cling to power | Worldwide protests over the despotism of Mugabe |
Zimbabwe - a nation under the yoke of oppression During the outrageously corrupt elections of 1980
which saw the end of Rhodesia, rampant intimidation of the rural population by
the terrorists ensured a victory for Robert Mugabe and his ZANU (PF) party. The
country then underwent a gradual decline into poverty and despotism, which
eventually brought about the emergence of the multi-racial Movement for
Democratic Change (MDC) in 1999.
With the rapid growth of support for the MDC came a violent reaction from the Mugabe regime, who began a campaign of state sponsored terror against its own population. Foremost targets in this campaign were the tiny white population, and in particular the white commercial farmers. This, despite their huge success in providing the bulk of foreign currency export earnings that kept the decrepit and corrupt state machinery running. Embassy comments on the Zimbabwe situation
