The clarity of the water and the beauty of the barren banks are unbelievable. You can see beautiful plants and caddis flies carrying their own cocoons under the water.

Lake Inari is in the Paatsjoki water system and it is the third largest and second deepest lake in Finland. Its water level is regulated. It is 50 kilometres wide, 80 kilometres long and 92 metres deep. Its coastline stretches for 3,308 kilometres and it has 3,318 islands. The water in the lake could cover Finland with a five-centimetre layer.

Its shores are steep and stony, but there are also sheltered bays and beaches. The lake has many very long, narrow sounds. The shore and water vegetation and micro-organisms all reflect its bleakness and northern location.

Sea phase – Part of the history of the lake
Climate – Continental and cold
Catchment area – 14,512 km2
Water – Low in nutrients and clear
