Bursaries

Information on bursaries available for the strengthening of grassroots women’s organisations in KwaZulu-Natal

Introduction

Fahamu (www.fahamu.org) has 10 bursaries available for staff from grassroots women’s organisations to undergo training on a choice of 4 of Fahamu’s distance learning capacity-building courses.

What capacity building courses are available in 2006?

Fahamu will provide 10 bursaries[1] for participants to register for one of Fahamu’s distance learning courses. Depending on the popularity of course choices indicated on the bursary application forms, one of the following courses will be available for registration in 2006:

  • Fundraising and resource mobilisation
  • Investigating, monitoring and reporting on human rights violations
  • Leadership and management for change
  • Practical financial management for NGOs

Each participant will also undergo training on a short introductory course on human rights.

What is the methodology of the distance learning courses?

PRE-WORKSHOP PHASE (approximately 10 weeks): Each participant is supplied with a carefully designed interactive CDROM developed by Fahamu in association with the University of Oxford. Each participant is registered on a closed Email-based discussion list through which they communicate with each other and with their course tutor.

Each participant completes self-assessed exercises on the CDROM as well as completing and submitting by Email, a series assignments that are formally assessed by the course tutor. Only those who complete this phase are permitted to enter into the subsequent phases. For those who have difficulties accessing a computer for working with the CDROM, we provide the full text of the CDROM in printable form.

WORKSHOP (3-4 days): Participants attend a face-to-face workshop which is facilitated by the course tutor. The workshop deals with issues that are not covered on the CDROM, and with matters arising from the previous phase. Participants come to the workshop with prepared outlines of mini-projects on the course that they propose to carry out in the Post-Workshop phase of the project. These are discussed in detail with the course tutor. The mini-project is practical research that the participant undertakes on any aspect of the course and if successfully completed, is designed to contribute to the strengthening of their organization.  The workshop will also cover training-of-trainers skills.

POST-WORKSHOP PHASE (10-13 weeks): Each participant continues their progress through the course and also carries out their project and prepares a written report of about 2000 words. This is formally assessed.

Those who complete all three phases are awarded a certificate from the University of Oxford. Participants contribute to a participatory evaluation of the project.

The courses are designed so that participants can study while at work. This allows them to learn and apply what they have learnt immediately and ‘in the heat of their own kitchens’. We suggest that participants spend at least 2 hours per working day studying and completing their assignments.

[1] This initiative has been made possible through a grant from the New Field Foundation Fund of the Tides Foundation

Every participant receives a full set of learning materials, including a CDROM that covers the entire course content. Each CDROM also contains a resource centre with a range of additional material that can be used by participating organisations to build up their own library of resource materials. These include lists of recommended books, copies of documents that are available from a variety of websites, links to useful websites, and other useful documents and papers. These libraries of materials are an invaluable source of reference for participants during and after the course.

Outcome

It is our hope that some of those who complete the course may be interested in becoming facilitators for further workshop-based courses, specifically designed to reach those community based women’s organisations that have limited access to computers or the internet. Those interested will receive further training in facilitation skills. Fahamu expects to have funding available for making these courses more widely available.

Conditions upon which bursaries will be awarded

Bursaries will be made on the following conditions:

Participating organisations must have access to a suitable computer with accesses to an email account for about 1-2 hours a day.

Participants must be salaried employees of grassroots women’s organisations or committed volunteers, who spend at least 20 hours per week working for the organisation and have committed their services to the organisation for the next 24 months. Participants must have at minimum, a matriculation certificate and must be proficient in English.

Participating organisations will be encouraged to set-up a provincial network to promote the continuity of this capacity-building initiative for grassroots women’s organisations, beyond the scope of this bursary fund.

For further information and application forms, please contact Anil Naidoo, Fahamu SA Trustee (anil@indiba-africa.org.za).

Applications close on 17 April 2006 at 17h00. Only emailed applications will be considered.
