Guidance on how to register

To sign up for the Royal Society newsletter, you must take the following steps.

1. Read the Terms and conditions and Privacy Policy governing the Royal Society’s website.
2. Next fill out the registration form
3. You should receive a confirmation email, and then receive our newsletter once a topic is posted that matches your interests.

Terms and conditions
Use of this site constitutes your acceptance of these Terms and Conditions and takes affect on the date from which you first use the site. The Royal Society reserves the right to change these Terms and Conditions at any time by posting changes online. You are responsible for reviewing regularly information posted online to ensure you are aware of changes to the Terms and Conditions. Your continued use of the Society’s website means you have agreed to these posted changes.

Talk policy
This policy has been established by the Royal Society to ensure its on-line discussion areas to ensure all contributions are law abiding and the discussion areas are safe for everyone to use. If your question is not answered here you can email the moderator at moderator@royalsoc.ac.uk.

By registering to take part in on-line discussions on the Royal Society’s website and/or associated Royal Society websites, you agree -

• Not to post any defamatory or illegal material of any nature. This includes text, graphics, video, programs or audio. Contributing material with the intention of committing or promoting an illegal act is strictly prohibited.
• To only post materials which are your own original work. You may not violate, plagarise or infringe on the rights of third parties including copyright, trademark, trade secret, privacy, personal, publicity or proprietary rights.
• Not to post intentionally false of misleading information
• Not to post or transmit any file that contains viruses, corrupted files or any other contaminating or destructive features that may change someone else’s computer
• To grant the Royal Society an unlimited and royalty-free licence to re-publish and use information you submit. The Royal Society reserves the right to use information placed on its site by third parties, including online discussion form contributions and that this may include transfer of such information outside the European Economic Area and to the United States.
• If you are under 16, to get your parents’ permission before taking part
• To your contributions being civil and respectful of others using the online discussion area
• To comply with the policy of no disruptive, offensive or abusive behaviour, contributions should be constructive and polite, and should not be contributed with the intent to cause distress or trouble.
• To comply with the policy of no unlawful or objectionable content: unlawful, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, racially offensive or otherwise objectionable material is not acceptable.
• Not to use multiple logins to disrupt the online discussion or annoy other users. If you do, action may be taken against you.
• To be patient with other users as they are of all ages and abilities.
• Not to advertise or sell goods and service
• Not to impersonate another person when making a contribution
• Not to use inappropriate eg offensive or rude user names
• Not to refer to specific website addresses or URLs. If you are aware of a relevant website, please notify the moderator
• Not to share your password for the online discussion forum with third parties
• Not to collect or store personal data about other contributors
• To take responsibility for all statements you make and acts that occur through your use of your password and the site
• To indemnify the Royal Society against all costs and claims in relation to any information posted or violation of the Royal Society’s Terms and Conditions of Use

The Royal Society reserves the right to monitor any contributions transmitted or received through its online discussion area and remove, without notice, any contribution or terminate any contributors future use of its online discussion area if such contributions or individuals violate the provisions of the Society’s Terms and Conditions of use.

The Royal Society reserves the right to use information placed on its site by third parties, including online discussion form contributions and that this may include transfer of such information outside the European Economic Area and to the United States.

Safety advice
Never reveal any personal information about yourself or anyone else (eg telephone number, home address or email address), and do not include a postal address of any kind. If you have a helpful address to share, inform the moderator who will contact that person or organisation seeking their permission to include them on the website IF the moderator feels it is appropriate.

Breaking the terms and conditions
If you fail to abide by these Terms and Conditions when taking part in a Royal Society online discussion forum, you will be sent an email which informs you why your contribution has either failed or been edited by the moderator. This email will also include the warning that, if you continue to break the rules, may result in action being taken against your email account or accounts. This may include placing your account(s) in an area that allows the moderator to pre-moderate your contribution or a temporary or permanent suspension which would stop you from participating in Royal Society online discussion forums.

If you contribute offensive or inappropriate content to the Royal Society website or engage in any disruptive behaviour on the website, the Royal Society may use whatever information is available about it to stop any further infringements. This may include informing third parties eg your employer, school or email provider.

The Royal Society reserves the right to delete any contribution or take action against any account, at any time, for any reason.
