THE KNOWLEDGE London Brain Teaser No 43

The new statue of Margaret Thatcher, complete with handbag, will temporarily be located at the Guildhall - very temporarily it turned out! The following Prime Ministers have outdoor statues in London - who are they and where are their statues?

  1. He lived in Baker Street and his last words were "Oh my country! How I leave my country!"
  2. Edward Stanley was three times Prime Minister. His statue has a representation of the old, pre-1834, House of Commons on its plinth. How is he better remembered?
  3. There are two statues in London to this Grand Old Man, one close to a bomber and a fighter, the other donated by a matchmaker.
  4. He was a Conservative, Liberal, Constitutional and Anti-Socialist and then, once again, a Conservative Member of Parliament. He wears an Air Commodore's greatcoat on his statue.
  5. Although he wears a Field Marshal's uniform on his statue, sculpted by Jacob Epstein, this Prime Minister actively fought against Britain.
