Katherine stands next to her mother. Florence is talking to Ruby, who is hiding behind her mother, as Lange took the picture.

Fifth of six (6) photographs taken by Dorthea Lange on March 9, 1936 at Nipomo, California. Florence stopped nursing Norma and Ruby has come out from behind her. This photograph was the one used by the newspapers the following day to report the story of the starving migrants.
 

Migrant Mother

Most famous of the six photographs and the sixth and last to be taken by Dorthea Lange on March 9, 1936 at Nipomo, California. Left to right in photo: Katherine Owens age 4, Florence Owens (later known as Thompson) age 32, Ruby Owens age 5. Baby on mother's lap is Norma age 1 year.
