What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a diverse philosophy of primary health care. It is devoted to determining the root causes of illness, rather than treating symptoms, and there is an emphasis on prevention of disease. Optimal health and healing is achieved utilizing natural and effective therapies, instead of depending on pharmaceutical drugs.

What can I expect from an appointment with the Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic doctors are well-known for the amount of quality time they spend with each patient. The initial visit is approximately 90 minutes which includes an extensive health history and a discussion of your present concerns. The second visit is approximately 60 minutes. Relevant laboratory studies or other diagnostic tests are requested to assist in evaluation of patients. A complete physical exam is performed and the treatment plan is outlined. Subsequent appointments vary from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on treatment modalities.

Will my Naturopathic Doctor collaborate with other healthcare professionals?

Naturopathic Doctors are trained to refer patients to other healthcare providers when necessary. They also work in consultation with other ND's, MD's, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and Registered Massage Therapists.

What does a physical exam involve?

The physical exam involves a head to toe analysis of the skin, hair, nails, eyes, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, musculoskeletal, lymphatic and nervous systems. This is a screening tool to uncover any underlying medical conditions, information regarding your nutritional status, and overall health. Breast, gynaecological and prostate examinations are also available with the Naturopathic Doctor.

Can my Naturopathic Doctor do blood work?

Yes. At Vital Force Naturopathic Health Centre, Dr. Hornyak ND is able to draw blood and send it to Gamma Dynacare Laboratory for analysis. She can send away for the same tests that MD's use. However, OHIP does not cover blood work requested by NDs. The cost bloodwork will therefore vary depending on the test.

How is a Naturopathic doctor different from a Homeopath?

Naturopathic Doctors are highly educated general practitioners that are trained to care for a variety of acute and chronic conditions. Formal education includes an undergraduate degree at a university and a four year Naturopathic Medicine program. ND's in Ontario must also be registered and licensed through the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy and are governed by the Drugless Practitioners Act. NDs use a broad range of treatment modalities, and homeopathy is one example. Homeopaths use only homeopathy to treat people. They are not required to have a university degree and are not licensed in Ontario.
