Application to sponsor a member of the family class
This application package is for Canadian citizens and permanent residents who wish to sponsor:
- a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner; or
- dependent children.
Note: Canada’s citizenship law was amended to allow Canadian citizens who adopt a child from a foreign country the option of applying for Canadian citizenship for their adopted child without first having to apply for permanent residence. An application for Canadian Citizenship for a person adopted by a Canadian citizen (after February 14, 1977) is available. Adopted persons who are adults may apply for themselves.
This sponsorship package includes three parts:
- Part 1: The sponsorship application
You, the sponsor, must fill out the sponsorship forms. Use the checklist provided (IMM5491) to make sure all the right forms are filled out and you have gathered the proper documents to support your application. - Part 2: The application for permanent residence
The person you are sponsoring and any family members included in the application must fill out the immigration forms. You, the sponsor, can send the forms to them or have them print the forms from this page. - Part 3: The region specific forms
The person you are sponsoring must fill out the forms specific to their region. They should use the checklist from the information guide specific to their region (Appendix A) to make sure they fill out all the right forms. You, the sponsor, can send them the forms or have them print the forms from this page.
After the person you are sponsoring has filled out all the sponsorship, immigration and region specific forms, they must send them to you with the supporting documents.
Once the all forms are properly filled out and all supporting documents are gathered, you must send the complete application kit to the Case Processing Centre.

If you do not send the sponsorship and immigration applications together or these are not completed correctly, the Case Processing Centre will not process them. They will return the applications to you (the sponsor.)
Sponsors living in the province of Quebec who wish to obtain further information on the province’s sponsorship requirements should contact the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles.

You have two options to obtain a fees receipt:- Payment of fees on the Internet
If you have Adobe® Acrobat Reader software, a printer, and a Visa, MasterCard or American Express credit card, you can pay your fees online. - Payment of fees at a financial institution in Canada
If you cannot or do not wish to pay online, you must obtain an original receipt form IMM 5401 in order to pay at a financial institution. Because of this form’s special features, it cannot be downloaded and printed from the website. You may, however, order it and it will be mailed to you.
