Landmine Survivors Network has long played a lead role in the Nobel Prize-winning International Campaign to Ban Landmines, urging governments to eradicate mines and provide for the rehabilitation of hundreds of thousands of mine victims worldwide. At conferences around the world, the firsthand accounts of survivors have proved indispensable in forcing governments to confront the human suffering inflicted by mines. LSN's founders and associates have appeared regularly in the media to draw attention to the needs of mine victims and their families. Here is a brief reverse chronology highlighting some of LSN's activities and honors. July 2003 On Sunday, July 13, Jerry White, Co Founder and Executive Director of Landmine Survivors Network, delivered a speech to the Monadnock Summer Lyceum in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The Unitarian Church in Peterborough, New Hampshire has hosted the Monadnock Summer Lyceum since 1970. The event is a historic series of summer lectures and speeches covering a broad range of social issues. The presentations signify a revival of the original Lyceum, begun in the mid-nineteenth century in New Hampshire. The Lyceum features prominent speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines who discuss important contemporary topics. Jerry White's presentation in tis entirity airs on New Hamphire Public Radio on July 20 at 4:00 P.M. June 2003 Jerry White and disabilities experts from LSN’s Advocacy Department traveled to the United Nations in New York City to attend the 2nd UN Ad Hoc Committee To Consider Proposals For A Convention to Promote the Rights of People With Disabilities. LSN is building a broad coalition of NGO’s and faith-based organizations to drive the UN Campaign and secure the Convention by 2006. April 2003 Jerry White and members of the LSN Jordan Network staff witnessed the final destruction of Jordan’s anti-personnel landmine stockpile by the Jordan Royal Engineering Corps on April 23, 2003. His Majesty King Abdullah II invited Mr. White, Adnan Al Aboudi, Director LSN-Jordan and two Jordanian survivors to meet and report on the stockpile destruction At the meeting, His Majesty announced the King Hussein Annual Awards for Excellence in Demining and Rehabilitation. Each year a deminer and humanitarian survivor care provider will be acknowledged and receive a cash award. The first contribution to support the award was contributed by the Allan R. White Memorial Fund of Landmine Survivors Network, Washington, D.C. March 2003 On March 23, Landmine Survivors Network held a dinner reception for LSN Patron, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, at the home of a supporter in Los Angeles, CA. The event was organized to celebrate the release of Her Majesty's new book, Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life. U2's Bono and Maria Shriver were among the guests, and the event received media coverage the following day in the weekend edition of the Los Angeles Times. March 2003 On March 8-9, Landmine Survivors Network Co-Founder, Ken Rutherford, Phd., delivered a Summary presentation to the General Assembly Meeting of Rehabilitation International (Arab Region) and the International Conference on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. His report focused on the human rights conditions of persons with disabilities and the benfits of a specialized human rights convention for people with disabilities. January 2003 LSN Executive Director Jerry White and Network Director Lindsay McMahon traveled to Vietnam to sign an agreement with the Government of Vietnam and the People's Committee of Bo Trach District launching our newest network office in Quang Binh Province, in central Vietnam. January 2003 Jerry White was interviewed on KPFA radio's "Flashpoints" program (www.flashpoints.net) which aired on Friday, January 31st.
