Grading Policy

Your grades will be determined by the following percentages:

20%

homework assignments *

20%

laboratory assignments *

20%

weekly quizzes

20%

exams during the semester

20%

final exam

* Repetitive Grading

These assignments will be graded in a unique way to help you learn and keep up with the material. Each problem on an assignment will be graded pass/fail; however, you may turn the problem in as many times as you like for grading until you get it correct. If you haven't passed the problem, the grader will tell you where you made your first mistake. All solid attempts at the problems are worth one-third credit. If you complete the problem correctly before the "deadline", you will get full credit for that problem; if you complete it correctly after the deadline, you will get two-thirds credit. We will strive to return anything that you turn in for grading quickly so that you can have time for revisions.

The following are some tips that will help you make the most of this grading scheme:

  • Plan to turn in assignments early so that you can receive feedback. It will also tell you if you need to seek out help on the assignments early.

  • Turn in individual problems when you have them complete, rather than waiting until you are done with the entire assignment.

  • Use a separate sheet of paper for each problem. This will make it easier for you to organize the correctly done problems when you review for exams.

Weekly quizzes will be given every Thursday at 3 pm. These will cover course material presented in class or on the homework. These will be graded in a limited partial credit format.

We will have 11 quizzes. Your quiz grade will be based on your top 10 efforts. There are no make-up quizzes except for medical emergencies.

An A will be 90% or above, B between 80% and 89%, C between 70% and 79%, and so on. There will be no comparison grading (curve).

Turning In Assignments

For hardcopy assignments, a "turn-in" bin will be kept in AC 304 to collect homework. Graded homework will be placed in a "return" bin in AC 304 daily as it is graded. You should have card access to this room 24/7.

Lab assignments are turned in by placing your files in a network folder and emailing james.rising(a)olin.edu, as described on the Homework Format page.
