In 2008 Bernard Tomic added the Australian Open boys’ singles title to an already glittering junior career that has seen him net the 12/u and 14/u Orange Bowl trophies, help Australia win the Junior Davis Cup final against Argentina in 2007, and reach the semifinal of the boys’ singles at Wimbledon in 2008. During the 2008 season he also stuck his toe in the senior tennis waters, playing in the Australian Open men’s singles qualifying and reaching the final of the Indonesia F2 and the quarterfinal of the Indonesia F3. These successes helped him attain his highest ATP ranking of 818 in the world. Bernard arrived in Australia from his birthplace in Stuttgart, Germany, aged three-and-a-half. His father, John, started work driving taxis while his mother, Ady, worked as a biomedical scientist. Bernard began playing tennis aged seven. His tennis hero is Pete Sampras and other sporting heroes include Lance Armstrong, Ian Thorpe and Michael Jordan. He would love to play against Roger Federer and “spend time with him”. Bernard loves lobster, pizza and sweets. His favourite singer is Eminem. His favourite surface is grass and when he’s not playing tennis he enjoys soccer, table tennis and basketball. He has one sister, Sara.
