Located 3 km north from Butaritari, Makin is the northernmost of the Gilbert Islands. Makin (sometimes referred to as Little Makin) consists of one large island (Little Makin) and a line of several smaller narrow islets (Aonbike, Tebua Tarawa, Kiebu and Onne) that extend southwards for 7 km. Total land area of the islands is 6.7 km². All of the islands are enclosed within a common fringing reef system.
