AIDS in Africa

  • Sub-Saharan Africa has more than 75% of the world’s HIV/AIDS cases, with 29.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS.

  • Women make up 58% of Africans living with HIV/AIDS. (See Kofi Annan’s article.)

  • AIDS has reduced average life expectancy by 15 years. (Africa Action)

  • Only 1% of Africans in need of antiretroviral treatment are receiving it. (UNAIDS)

  • More than 11 million children have lost one or both parents to AIDS in sub-Saharan African. That number is expected to rise to 20 million by 2010 (UNICEF).
