    from Library of Congress. This is a good place to start for gathering information form countries around the world - links to electronic resources.  Not comprehensive (ones I checked had few visual art links).

    World History - HyperHistory
    - quick reference for people, events and maps. Over 2000 files spanning 3000 years of history.

    Sacred Sites
    - Places of Peace and Power: The Sacred Site Pilgrimages of Martin Gray. Beautiful photographs from around the world. Martin Gray is an anthropologist and photographer specializing in the study of sacred sites and pilgrimage traditions around the world. 

    Sacred Destinations
    - Good site for teachers interested in religion, history, archaeology, and architecture. More than 1,500 sacred sites, holy places, pilgrimage destinations, historical religious sites and religious buildings and artifacts around the world (very little from Africa and Australia is not represented). Exercise Fair Use in selecting images for PowerPoint.

    Canadian Museum of Civilization
    Primarily focuses on native cultures of Canada (from ancient times to present -- but there sure is a lot to explore. Other world cultures represented in special exhibits. Be sure to check teacher's guides.

African, Oceanic and New World Cultures From Detroit Institute for the Arts.  Several images given for each reason with detailed information (click on thumbnail for larger images)

Migrations in History from Smithsonian - explores the nature and complexity of the movement of peoples, cultures, ideas, and objects. See Africa's Legacy in Mexicio. Excellent site for social studies/art integration.

Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade Serbia (former Yugoslavia). Representative of Serbian culture - interesting exhibits.

Anthropology Collection - Field Museum, Chicago Illinois. Presents a sampling of artifacts from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, Pacific Islands and Australia. 

  • Masks Around the World links page

    Masks from Around the World
    - Collection of Bob Ibold. Commercial site with excellent images. Masks from Africa, India, the Himalayas, Asia, China, Korea, Java, Bali, New Guinea, Northwest Coast America, Mexico, Guatemala, the Caribbean, and Native America. Also included are masks for Halloween, Party, Drama, Art, and Protection.

  • Australian Aboriginal Art - Art of Australia 
    Links page and Internet lesson created for Middle School students.

    Tribal Works: Aboriginal Art of the First Person Gallery on Sanibel Island in Florida. The gallery (and site) combine works from Africa, Australia, Native America and the Arctic. There even are some Papua New Guinea pieces. Each piece is accompanied by some descriptive text. There also is some overview text about some of the cultures represented. This site was recommended by William Ernest Waites.

    A good place to look if you are interested in symbolism. Symbolism in many world cultures and periods in art.

  • On- The Matrix: Photographs from Around the World
    Photographs from Bruce G. Stumpf's world travels. Africa, Asia, Middle East,  North and South America.  Middle East On-The Matrix.

On the Line -- millennium project that explored and celebrated the lives of people who live along the zero degree meridian line – a line which passes through Togo, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Algeria, Spain, France and the UK.

  • History for Kids  
    has lots of information, all specially written for middle school students by experienced university professors. The site is kid-friendly and kid-safe (though we cannot guarantee the sites linked to). Link to Africa, Egypt, Greece, China. Rome, Germany, Islam, West Asia and the Middle Ages. Lesson plans and craft projects are also available.

History of Nations Each country is covered by a brief essay which gives the highlights of each nation's history. A good place to start for review. Great resource for social studies and visual art teachers. (Note: Puerto Rico is slighted - not much information is given)
