Derby Braves

The Derby Braves were formed in September 1995 through the efforts of the Students Union and a number of students, notably, Julia Holdway, Lee Willitts, and Dave Carr.

Soon thereafter, the committee appointed Phil Rodger as head coach. After obtaining kit, the team held regular practices leading to a pair of games that were played in a tournament at the University of Hertfordshire. The Braves lost both games - to Nottingham and Hertfordshire - but established that they had the potential for a bright future leading to their entry into the BCAFL in 1996.

Derby Braves have recently have recently been through a shake up and are looking forward to the upcoming 2008-09 season.

Over the years the team has had players reach ''''All Stars'''', GB Bulldogs and the GB Lions but the pinnacle was in 2007 when Michael Andrew played in NFL Europa for the Amsterdam Admirals.

Also in 2007 the Derby Braves were crowned Northern Plate Champions. Our faithful Cheerleaders are called the Derby Ravens who have represented the university at the UKCA national and community champions, a great spirited team to have on game days.

The future has a lot in store for the Derby Braves and this chapter is far from finished.
