Evolution of Fixation
The original version of Fixation, version 1.x, was developed by Adam Miller
between 1996 and 1998. The last version released by Adam was 1.41 and is
available in the files section of the Fixation discussion group.
Fixation 1.x is a Motorola 680x0 application and uses MacTCP. It was developed in
Metrowerks CodeWarrior 1.2.2. Adam is known as "adum" on the ICC and FICS although
he no longer maintains an active presence at either site. Adam has stopped
playing chess and has switched to "go".
In the fall of 1998, I e-mailed Adam about my making changes to Fixation. At that time,
source code was still available at Adam's web site (gone now). He consented to my
taking up the challenge of creating a new version. However, my first problem was
getting Fixation to compile under Apple's Macintosh Programmer's Workshop (MPW). While
this was solved with the additional of minor source code changes, I ran into a major
snag of missing header files. It seemed that the latest source archive that Adam posted
did not include all the header files required. Adam suggested I contact someone on the
FICS to see if they had an older copy of the source. That trail however did not go
anywhere. I was examining the TCP/IP networking code one day and it struck me that
perhaps the header files were in the Newswatcher source archive. Lo and behold,
their they were! To be continued at a later date...
