Coats Island

Coats Island

Coats Island lies at the northern entrances into Hudson Bay, situated 71 km south across the Fisher and Evans straits from Southampton Island (just visible at the top-left of the above image). The smaller Mansel Island is located 115 km to the east (see panoramic image).

Measuring 127 km in length and with a maximum width of 72 km across the centre, Coats Island covers an area of 5,498 km². The landscape is generally flat, for the most part gently sloping from the mainly low-lying coasts to around 80 m above sea level in the centre. The island's highest elevations are found in the extreme northeast, inland from the steep slopes of the Cape Pembroke area, where an unnamed peak of a relatively small, rocky upland area reaches a height of 182 m above sea level.

The upland area consists of a basement of ancient metamorphic rocks, while the remainder (the majority) of the island consists of sedimentary rock formations — limestones and sandstones — that are often overlain by raised beach deposits. Much of the landscape comprises a wet tundra environment with numerous shallow ponds and extensive areas of marshland. A large (and unnamed) lake system is found at the centre of the island (beneath some light cloud cover in the above image).

Situated 3.2 km off the northwestern shore, lies the elongate Bencas Island (10 km by 1 km)
