Mac OS X Developer Tools Update


The December 2002 Mac OS X Developer Tools include everything you need to begin developing applications for Mac OS X. Project Builder 2.1, Interface Builder 2.3.2, AppleScript Studio, gcc 3.1, updated documentation, and much more are all included in the Developer Tools.

The December 2002 Mac OS X Developer Tools require Mac OS X 10.2 or higher. All Apple Developer Connection (ADC) members may download the Developer Tools for free from the ADC Member Site. For added convenience, you may also purchase the Developer Tools on CD-ROM for the cost of shipping and handling (US$ 20) on the ADC Member Site.


 What's New in the December 2002 Developer Tools


This December 2002 release of the Mac OS X Developer Tools includes the following additions and updates. Please see the "What's New.pdf" file on the CD-ROM/image for more information not included in this summary:

  • gcc 3.1: This version of the compiler contains several bug fixes and optimizations. See the "What's New.pdf" file for more details.

  • Project Builder 2.1: This version has many changes; please read the Project Builder Release Notes for full details. A few of the most significant new features are:
    • Support for external code editors
    • Multiple compiles at the same time on multi-CPU machines, for greatly enhanced performance
    • Custom key binding support (including predefined sets for popular environments)
    • Vast improvements to the CodeWarrior project importer
    • Many other features and bug fixes

  • AppleScript Studio 1.2.1 adds enhanced dictionary support. The sample projects will now run on both Mac OS X 10.1 systems as well as Mac OS X 10.2. Please read the AppleScript Studio release notes for more information.

  • Interface Builder 2.3.2 fixes bugs for Cocoa and Carbon. See the Interface Builder Release Notes for more details.

  • CHUD 2.5.1: The CHUD framework and toolset for low-level system debugging and profiling is now included on the CD-ROM/image (not included in hardware preinstalls of the developer tools)

  • AppleScript Editor 2.0 Beta: This is available in the Pre-release Software folder (not included in hardware preinstalls of the developer tools). Please read the "About These Packages.rtf" file in the Pre-release Software folder for more details. Note that this package requires Mac OS X 10.2.3 or higher.

  • jikes: The jikes Java compiler has been updated to version 1.17.

  • PackageMaker: New features have been added, including:
    • Drag-and-drop functionality in the list editor
    • Inline attribute editing
    • Progress sheet for status during package creation
    • Package completion dialog

  • Updated SDKs: Updated information, samples, and SDK info has been provided for Sherlock, DiscRecording, CoreAudio, FireWire, ForceFeedback, and Availability Macros.

  • New and Updated documentation: Lots of new documentation content is included in this release.

 Tips for Downloading


You can avoid downloading delays due to high usage in your area by accessing software from any of our regional servers in the U.S., Europe, Japan, or Asia. To select a server, click the location radio button in the ADC Member Site prior to starting your download.

There are two different ways you can download Developer Tools:

Complete December 2002 Mac OS X Developer Tools in one disk image:

  • Description: This is the complete set of updated tools, libraries, headers, samples, and documentation in one file.

After downloading the Developer Tools in one disk image, double-click the image to mount it. Then, double-click on the .mpkg or .pkg installation package in the image.

Complete December 2002 Mac OS X Developer Tools split into several disk image segments:

  • Description: This is the complete set of updated tools, libraries, headers, samples, and documentation in 21 separate image segments of 10MB/each.

After downloading the Developer Tools split into several images, double-click any of the segmented images to mount the entire disk image. Then, double-click on the .mpkg or .pkg installation package for installation.

Some previous versions of the Mac OS X Developer Tools for earlier versions of Mac OS X are still available for download. Earlier versions of the developer tools can be downloaded as one disk image or in some cases split into several disk image segments, from the ADC Member Site. After downloading the Developer Tools split into several images, double-click any of the segmented images to mount the entire disk image. Then, double-click on the .mpkg or .pkg installation package for installation.
