Desktop Coolification

Posted by SketchFactor at 6/28/2004 3:03 PM PDT

If the "WortWortWortHog" wallpaper on your computer is starting to feel a little stale, you're in luck! Bungie.net artist Zoe is at it again, this time with a new desktop based off the uber popular OXM cover created by Lorraine McLees last year. Check it out!

The Halo 2 desktop lovin' keeps on rollin here at Bungie.net. This latest wallpaper is based off the now famous illustration of Master Chief crouched with two SMGs in hand. This painting, created by Lorraine "mehve" McLees for the cover of OXM magazine last year, has become one of the most widely used and recognizable images for Halo 2. The original cover art contributed to what would later become the biggest selling, most popular issue in the history of OXM. Zoe has taken the classic pose and added her own personal touches to create one very cool desktop. Enjoy!

HaloCE/HEK Update 2

Posted by SketchFactor at 6/17/2004 4:37 PM PDT

by Cunbelin: After a week long chase involving tranquilizer guns and unspeakable acts in his local park, Cunbelin has been returned to his writing desk, where he was poked with sharp sticks until he once again wrote an update. See the insanity unfold in HaloCE/HEK Update Number 2!

The Prodigal Updater Returns with Another Edition of HaloCE Madness Well nothing like starting out with dirty, dirty, LIES. Sketch and Frankie have shown me the error of my ways and now I must beg forgiveness or there will be more punishements, many many more. I apologize for my lie of weekly coverage, rather than give you stupid excuses let us just accept that for now there will be bi-weekly updates. Secondly I apologize that several of my links that worked when the post went up then in the course of time went down or moved. To make up, check out this snazzy updated resource link from the gearbox forum. I hope that you will accept my apology that some of the sites became unavailable and I hope that you won't hold down-time against otherwise great sites. So lets get down to business - First up lets talk new maps, there has been an explosion of maps in recent weeks, and as much as I'd love to tell you about each and every one I'm going to have to limit it to three. Frost Frost is a fairly large map, and it is one of the most polished maps I've seen. It uses existing textures and scenery to great effect and extends them well. One interesting feature is the inclusion of colored teleporters. My only real complaint is the use of the teleporter exit scenery item to designate a teleporter to the "garage". Another great map from Baka. You can grab it here. Halcyon I'll get right to it, Halcyon isn't your standard Halo map, it has a feel more like a traditional FPS CTF map. It basically consists of a long hallway with some cover that connects the two bases, it also includes some side passages as well. The texturing is a little different than what you usually see but it works, and works very well in my opinion. It doesn't have quite the polish of some maps but it is just good old fun to play. If you are looking for a little change from the standard halo maps you should really give halcyon a try. You can grab it here Fissure Fall Fissure fall is a solid map with lots of little nooks and crannies to explore, the only thing I can fault the map for are a few texture issues, though I expect most times you'll be too busy killing other players to notice them. The map itself is a little reeling when you first start exploring, but it's mostly symmetric design should allow you to fairly quickly understand the map. Fissure fall has some of the most impressive architecture I've seen in Halo, that includes single player. For some intense CTF action in some impressive architecture with some mind boggling Z axis elements, check out Fissure Fall. You can grab it here These are just a small sampling to whet your appetite, to get more check out Haloworld hosted by halocity.org.
Alright there's the released maps, lets check out a few maps in production now soon to be available for your enjoyment. Camtrack Arena Camtrack is a beta map that seems to be perpetually in production, this has echoes of blood gulch, but has a feeling all it's own. You can grab the beta from here. You should know that this is indeed a beta, and it does have gameplay issues, but I thoroughly expect you will enjoy it even in it's incomplete form. Zanzibar If it works, steal it, that's what I always say! Clearly taking my advice not one but two teams are in the process of bringing the E3 hit map Zanzibar to HaloCE. If you aren't familiar with Zanzibar I suggest checking out this great article on it here. From personal experience I can tell you that Zanzibar is one solid map. One of the teams has released an update. Check it out here. Once again I will have to apologize as I'm out of time, well not so much out of time as the blood level is too high in my caffeine system. I promise next update I will include two really cool tidbits on the HEK, but for now you will just have to settle for a couple new resource links. For extended documention on the HEK check out this page. Hosted by FPSGamers.se Another great map site, recently updated, and the host for all the feature maps today Haloworld. --------------------------------------------- If you missed Cunbelin's first update, you can check that out here!

28 Million Strong... and Growing

Posted by SketchFactor at 6/14/2004 4:26 PM PDT

If you've been a part of Bungie.net since before we launched the "new hotness" in April, then you've no doubt seen just how crazy-busy our site has become over the past few months. How crazy? Well over 28 million page views crazy!

Everyone knows that the new Bungie.net has seen a substantial increase in overall traffic and membership. When we launched the new site back on April 13th (our "official launch day" even though we were live starting the afternoon of the 12th) we got nearly one million page views in a single day. To put it in perspective... that's a LOT. The crusty old Bnet of yesteryear didn't have fancy stat-tracking so we really don't have much hard data to compare it to, so suffice it to say that we've already eclipsed the lifetime traffic of the old site in a matter of weeks. Here's a quick look at the past few months of Bungie.net by the numbers: [*]28,000,000 total page views (as of 6/7) [*]176,886 forum posts (as of today!.. and only 3 moderators, yikes!) [*]37,000 daily unique visitors (on avg.) [*]24,300 new user accounts created (as of 6/7) [*]13 new Halo 2 screenshots [*]4 death threats [*]2 marriage proposals [*]1 complaint from Microsoft legal regarding image of a drunken Webmaster on our error page It's been an exciting few weeks and the game isn't even out yet! Stick around, we're just getting warmed up and there's plenty of good stuff yet to come... And tell your friends and your friends' friends, the more the merrier. Our Underground Army is going to need to be rather large before we can attempt to act on our final, secret plans for world domination.

No Handheld Halo

Posted by Frankie at 6/11/2004 4:44 PM PDT

Recent internet reporting has suggested that a Game Boy version of Halo is in the works. We can officially lay that rumor to rest.

There is no Game Boy version of Halo planned, and none in production. It's very unlikely that such a version would ever happen for all the obvious reasons, and the less obvious reasons, that the ColecoVision talks fell apart and The Bandai Pippin version is taking up all our development bandwidth…

The E3 Game Critics Awards are arguably the most sought after plaudit at E3. This year, Halo 2's multiplayer demo garnered three of them. Got Content?

Posted by SketchFactor at 6/3/2004 5:04 PM PDT

As you probably noticed, our latest top story was written by a Bungie community member just like you. Do you have a cool idea for a story or something interesting to share with our readers?

One of the major reasons our community kicks so much ass is the awesome and talented people who make it up. Anyone who is a Bungie.net member has the power to submit their own news story which will then be viewed by thousands and thousands of people across the world. Sure, there's myself and of course our beloved content monkey Frankie, but neither of us can possibly keep up with all the cool things happening out there in light of the other top secret projects we have to handle. This is where you come in. If you're signed in to Bungie.net, you'll notice there's a button on the front page that says "submit news." This is there for our members to use to share information and interesting news from the "trenches." Have a huge LAN event coming up? Kicking off a new fan site? Put your story on the Bungie.net front page and share it with the world! There are of course a few rules to abide by... Not just any story is going to make it's way on our front page. Naturally it must be written well - this means it's coherent, free of spelling and grammar errors and generally comes across as "professional." Also, it needs to be relevant. Anything related to Bungie - our games, our community, our fans - is all fair game. It should also be interesting - will people care to read it? And lastly, don't plagerize. Write your own stuff, don't copy and paste an AP news feed or steal something from a fansite unless it's been cleared by the author and you give them credit. In some cases, you can even contribute a top story, like Cunbelin did for us this week. If you have an idea for a story that you think would make a great top story, send a message to Frankie or I with your idea and we'll get back to you. If we use it, we'll make you an honorary Bungie.net volunteer staffer and send you a special gift in the mail. The power is in your hands. We welcome your help in making Bungie.net a better place and helping to keep us all connected and informed throughout the best community in the universe!
