How many Rupees is this again?

GrimBrother One over at HBO picked up on a Kotaku article detailing a pretty interesting Halo Custom Edition Map based on Nintendo's Zelda Universe.  If that peaks your interest, you should hit the Link below and check it out.  They have video and everything!

Shipwrecked, Episode 58.

Some things are best left uncovered.  Episode 58 of Shipwrecked teaches us all valuable lessons.  And while fifty-eight might be a strange place for us to start in on the Shipwrecked series, you should check it out anyway.  It's old school.  And old school is always awesome.

Mike Miller inspired.

HBO just posted a link to a pretty sweet Halo PC Tribute video compiled by Eckosama (EMPTYSHELLS) Hussayne.  It's named after the original Covenant domination videos, "Legends," created by Mike Miller, but Eckosama is definitely doing his own thing.  Check it out below and hit the link to get it in HD.

Interesting Halo 1 PC Stat

Posted by sawnose at 6/4/2007 6:33 PM PDT

Halo 1 PC is still going strong, according to a stat from Gamespy. Details inside...

Have you ever wondered if there's more of a purpose to the yellow sticker with the 25-digit product key than to sell keyboards by wearing out your old one? Actually, there is -- through a complicated, flowcharted process that ranks somewhere between alchemy and string theory in terms of the number of people who have mastered it, the process that prints those yellow stickers also generates a "hash" -- a scrambled summary -- of each, and a list of hashes gets sent to me (actually, I have to pick it up on CD from a Microsoft building) whenever a batch of stickers gets printed. This list of hashes then gets sent to Gamespy, which provides the online service for Halo PC. They make sure that only people with real copies of the game get to play, and only one person per key at a time. Aside from deterring piracy, this helps our legitimate players by allowing you to ban players from your servers, knowing that they have to pay for another copy to get back in.

What does this have to do with stats? Well, I just logged in to the key-admin site over at Gamespy to deal with a new batch of yellow stickers that was just printed, and found that they keep a tally of how many unqiue (and legit) product keys of Halo PC have played online in the last 30 days. Ready?

132,102!

This is pretty impressive for a game nearing its 4th birthday. Incidentally, this includes regular and Custom Edition users, since the CD key is the same across both versions (but it only counts each user once regardless).

Halo Map Battle!

Posted by SketchFactor at 3/24/2007 12:06 PM PDT

A Halo 2 enters its twilight years and Halo 3 looms on the horizon, we're embarking on a journey to determine which Halo multiplayer map is better than all the rest. Through a series of polls you can help us crown the ultimate killing ground in our Bungie.net "Map Battle."  Get to votin!

Halo has always been known for great multiplayer and it's not just due to the pistol or sword or any of the various means of destruction at your disposal. These tools are pointless if you don't have a good map to unleash them in.

Here at Bungie.net we're kicking off our first ever Halo "Map Battle" as we seek to determine which Halo multiplayer maps are truly the best of the best in the eyes of our fans.

Since our scientific poll system can only contain a maximum of 8 total entries, we've split the voting up across several different polls. We'll combine the highest scoring maps from Halo 1, Halo PC and Halo 2 into one final showdown to determine the overall winner.

It's time to step up and represent your favorite maps and rock the vote at the polls listed below. Check back soon for the next round of voting!

Help Custom Map Team

Posted by Yoozel at 7/1/2006 6:30 PM PDT

With the release of the Custom Map Team's revamp of Halo's (PC) campaign came with a bit more than expected. An article posted today stated that they are accepting donations from the community to help pay for overages on the server used to host the mod. Read on for more details.

Recently Custom Map Team posted an article on their website asking the community to help pay for surplus charges on their server payment. Within hours of release the server hosting the mod of Halo's (PC) campaign was being over run with download requests. Eventually the server had to be shut down and in the ruins of the download frenzy was a $400 dollar surplus charge for overages on the server.

CMT is asking the community to help pay the surplus charge so they can resume normal operation or expand their server package to meet the download demands. If you wish to donate to CMT's fund, please visit their website or HaloImpulse's site to contribute. Follow the paypal link on either site to donate. To ensure no confusion as to where your money is going, be sure to include either “For HI server" or “For CMT server” in your paypal donation. Also to alleviate some stress on CMT's server, the CMT campaign mod has been mirrored at Halomaps.org and is available for download here

Black Art of Halo Mods

Posted by KPaul at 6/28/2006 12:48 AM PDT

The next release in Stephen Cawood's long line of Halo-related books is finally here. The Black Art of Halo Mods hit store shelves recently, and there isn't enough space on the interweb to describe the plethora of information available in this book.

The Black Art of Halo Mods by Stephen Cawood is packed with info on both the basic and advanced techniques of Halo CE customization. Included in the book is a crap load of tutorials and information on everything you can think of. Weapons, vehicles, bipeds, levels; you name it, it's got it.

The most important parts of the book are the extensive chapters on the undocumented features of the Halo Editing Kit. Some of you might be familiar with the Halo2CE Mod released a while back. Well they were generous enough to donate some of their top secret information on customization breakthroughs to the book. Another important part is the introduction to the upcoming all-in-one Halo tool Prometheus - http://www.halodev.org.

Although Halo Custom Edition is the main focus of the book, there is plenty of information on the history of Halo customization, which dates back over three years ago! I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot about whats inside this book, so hurry up and grab your copy today!

You can grab a copy from Amazon or your local book store.

CMT Halo Campaign Mod Released!

Posted by Yoozel at 6/25/2006 1:34 PM PDT

jcap writes:

The Custom Map Team's makeover of Halo's singleplayer campaign has been released for Halo Custom Edition after months of anxiously waiting for its completion.  With all new content, campaign has a completely new feel to it.  Full details on the mod are in the continuation of this story.

For those of you who haven’t been following the Halo CE community news, over the past few months, the Custom Map Team (CMT) has been on a mission which no one had gone on before - redesigning Halo’s campaign maps for Halo Custom Edition. Since it was started, every single map has had the addition of new textures, shaders, environments, weapons, vehicles, animations, sounds, and a redesigned HUD. And because it’s the Custom Map Team, everything is 100% user created content.

Weapons such as the upgraded Halo 3-like Assault Rifle, an Anti-Aircraft Rocket Launcher, a new silenced Sniper Rifle, a silenced SMG, and a Battle Rifle with a Grenade Launcher, in addition to every original weapon overhauled. New vehicles such as four new Pelicans, two new Warthogs, a drivable Wraith, and an Apparition have been added. A new, custom biped (Master Chief) has also shown its face in the mod. These are just a few changes/additions, so for a full overview you can either take a look at the final mod pics which can be seen in this post, or you can watch it all in action in the seven minute release trailer, which has its link below.

The mod officially made its public release on June 25, 2006. Even with it mirrored on two servers, they were quickly taken down at 3:00AM EST due to roughly 250 people attempting to download at once.

To view the official CMT release trailer, click here.

All of the maps can be downloaded either individually or as one big map pack here.

To play the maps, you can use the CMT UI as your main menu, designed specifically for these maps with the original Halo Xbox shaders.

Custom intro videos can be retrieved from right here.

For first-time installers, or if you need help installing, follow the CMT’s Maps Installations for Dummies guide.

Halo PC 1.06 - Manual Update

Posted by sawnose at 11/16/2004 2:25 PM PST

We're about to release the 1.06 update for Halo PC. Users of 1.05 will need to follow these *manual* update instructions to receive the update.

Halo Hot-Fix v1.06: The Halo for Windows v1.06 Hotfix addresses a rare crash bug that could occur if a malicious individual (hacker) purposely imitates a game server and sends invalid data to clients who try to browse the server list. This hot-fix changes the version number of Halo for Windows and the Halo for Windows Dedicated Server to v1.06 from v1.05. NOTE: Due to an incompatibility discovered between some systems and the updated Auto-patcher released with version 1.05, users of 1.05 will have to manually download an updated Auto-patcher 1.06 and run it from the Halo directory to receive this latest update. Users updating form prior versions can auto-patch from the game. This issue is addressed for any future patches beyond 1.06. Users of HaloPC 1.0 through 1.04 will receive the normal auto-update message, however a change in the auto-updater will require users of 1.05 to follow a special manual-update procedure: If you are running HaloPC 1.05, follow the following precedure to update: 1. Save the following file to your game directory, such as c:\program files\microsoft games\halo. Overwrite the existing file. Remember to "save" this file, don't try to "open" it directly from the website. HaloUpdate 1.06 2. Now that the file is saved, run it. If you receive an error message, such as that strings.dll was not found, you probably didn't save it to the location where the game was installed. 3. Allow it to download the full 1.06 patch and install it. You're done! Users of versions other than 1.05 can auto-patch, or download and run this file: Halo PC 1.06 A new dedicated server is available here: Halo 1.06 Dedicated Server

Halo PC 1.05 on Tuesday

Posted by sawnose at 9/6/2004 2:04 PM PDT

Halo PC 1.05 (a hotfix version) will be released Tuesday. Read on for details and a link to the dedicated server

This is a 1-day advance notice that we'll be releasing a hotfix to Halo PC (v 1.05) sometime tomorrow. No feature changes, just two fixes: 1. Security fix to prevent a malicious user from being able to shut down the game on the server (never yet exploited, that we know of) 2. Fix for the XP SP2 problems as noted in my other recent thread on The Maw forum here on www.bungie.net. If you would like to get your dedicated servers ready, here is the download: Halo PC 1.05 Dedicated Server. I'll be sending the corresponding hotfix for Halo CE (to v. 1.05 to stay consistent) to Gearbox tomorrow also, please see their forums at that time for download instructions. (I'll set Halo CE to auto-update also, if Gearbox has a codesigning certificate available (I'm not sure). If they don't, I will refrain from having it auto-update, for the protection of the users, who we don't want to encourage to run unsigned bits that are pushed to them, due to the risk of spoofing.) Feel free to copy this post to the Gearbox forums - I never got around to setting up an account there :-) -Roger

Five Years of Halo!

Posted by Frankie at 7/21/2004 2:07 PM PDT

Today is the fifth anniversary of the MacWorld Halo Trailer and announcement - the world's very first viewing of what would eventually end up being the biggest selling game on a console nobody had thought of yet.

Thanks to Halo.Bungie.Org for reminding us, as well as having a very nice link to a pic of the trailer launch itself. As Bungie old-schoolers of course know, Halo was originally announced for the Mac and we delivered it right on time. Give or take several years.

HaloCE/HEK Update 2

Posted by SketchFactor at 6/17/2004 4:37 PM PDT

by Cunbelin: After a week long chase involving tranquilizer guns and unspeakable acts in his local park, Cunbelin has been returned to his writing desk, where he was poked with sharp sticks until he once again wrote an update. See the insanity unfold in HaloCE/HEK Update Number 2!

The Prodigal Updater Returns with Another Edition of HaloCE Madness Well nothing like starting out with dirty, dirty, LIES. Sketch and Frankie have shown me the error of my ways and now I must beg forgiveness or there will be more punishements, many many more. I apologize for my lie of weekly coverage, rather than give you stupid excuses let us just accept that for now there will be bi-weekly updates. Secondly I apologize that several of my links that worked when the post went up then in the course of time went down or moved. To make up, check out this snazzy updated resource link from the gearbox forum. I hope that you will accept my apology that some of the sites became unavailable and I hope that you won't hold down-time against otherwise great sites. So lets get down to business - First up lets talk new maps, there has been an explosion of maps in recent weeks, and as much as I'd love to tell you about each and every one I'm going to have to limit it to three. Frost Frost is a fairly large map, and it is one of the most polished maps I've seen. It uses existing textures and scenery to great effect and extends them well. One interesting feature is the inclusion of colored teleporters. My only real complaint is the use of the teleporter exit scenery item to designate a teleporter to the "garage". Another great map from Baka. You can grab it here. Halcyon I'll get right to it, Halcyon isn't your standard Halo map, it has a feel more like a traditional FPS CTF map. It basically consists of a long hallway with some cover that connects the two bases, it also includes some side passages as well. The texturing is a little different than what you usually see but it works, and works very well in my opinion. It doesn't have quite the polish of some maps but it is just good old fun to play. If you are looking for a little change from the standard halo maps you should really give halcyon a try. You can grab it here Fissure Fall Fissure fall is a solid map with lots of little nooks and crannies to explore, the only thing I can fault the map for are a few texture issues, though I expect most times you'll be too busy killing other players to notice them. The map itself is a little reeling when you first start exploring, but it's mostly symmetric design should allow you to fairly quickly understand the map. Fissure fall has some of the most impressive architecture I've seen in Halo, that includes single player. For some intense CTF action in some impressive architecture with some mind boggling Z axis elements, check out Fissure Fall. You can grab it here These are just a small sampling to whet your appetite, to get more check out Haloworld hosted by halocity.org.
Alright there's the released maps, lets check out a few maps in production now soon to be available for your enjoyment. Camtrack Arena Camtrack is a beta map that seems to be perpetually in production, this has echoes of blood gulch, but has a feeling all it's own. You can grab the beta from here. You should know that this is indeed a beta, and it does have gameplay issues, but I thoroughly expect you will enjoy it even in it's incomplete form. Zanzibar If it works, steal it, that's what I always say! Clearly taking my advice not one but two teams are in the process of bringing the E3 hit map Zanzibar to HaloCE. If you aren't familiar with Zanzibar I suggest checking out this great article on it here. From personal experience I can tell you that Zanzibar is one solid map. One of the teams has released an update. Check it out here. Once again I will have to apologize as I'm out of time, well not so much out of time as the blood level is too high in my caffeine system. I promise next update I will include two really cool tidbits on the HEK, but for now you will just have to settle for a couple new resource links. For extended documention on the HEK check out this page. Hosted by FPSGamers.se Another great map site, recently updated, and the host for all the feature maps today Haloworld. --------------------------------------------- If you missed Cunbelin's first update, you can check that out here!

Halo Custom Edition and HEK FAQ

Posted by Achronos at 5/5/2004 5:31 PM PDT

By now, you've all heard about the release of Halo Custom Edition and the HEK. While Gearbox is taking point on this release through their website and forums, we realize that many of you are not familiar with that community or what the Halo Custom Edition is.

The Halo PC test lead, Roger "sawnose" Wolfson, has posted a FAQ in the Maw that should help you figure out what is going on. It also may help clarify some questions that some of you have asked us via various emails and forum posts. Although the FAQ mentions this, it is important to note that Halo Custom Edition is unsupported by Microsoft and Bungie. We can only provide support for the official Halo PC release, currently at version 1.04. Questions regarding Halo Custom Edition and the Halo Editing Kit (HEK) should be dealt with through the Gearbox forums. Please send questions and comments regarding the release that way.

Halo PC Editing Kit Update

Posted by SketchFactor at 4/30/2004 1:00 PM PDT

Would-be-modders who have been waiting patiently for the Halo Editing Kit don't have to wait much longer. Today we're happy to announce that Gearbox will be releasing the HEK along with a few additional code updates very soon...

Good news for fans of Halo PC! Gearbox Software has nearly finished work on the much anticipated Halo Editing Kit and a public release is very close. Bungie received the near final build of the HEK two weeks ago and is happy to report that the code has been reviewed and passed back to Gearbox for final testing and distribution. The HEK will allow gamers to create their own maps and multiplayer experiences using the same suite of tools the developers use. Gearbox will oversee the release and ongoing support of the HEK, which is not officially supported by Bungie or Microsoft. Both teams have worked together to create a process in which Gearbox can continue to release content updates and game enhancements without affecting the original retail code. Fans who are interested in playing custom created maps or taking advantage of new game updates will need to download the new software available on the Gearbox site. These new software updates are optional and will not be included in the game's auto-update system. Stay tuned to Bungie.net in the days and weeks ahead for more information on the HEK and additional developments for Halo PC. For more information about the Halo Editing Kit, check out the Halo PC Editing FAQ at the Gearbox site. UPDATE: Gearbox has a new forum up and running strictly for discussing the upcoming "Halo Custom Edition" - the name for the new unsupported software they are releasing soon. Get the latest scoop HERE.

Additionally, you can submit news to Bungie. All that's required is a Bungie.net account. We will review your submission and if it is worthy we'll add it to our blog.
