Gamasutra Looks at Bungie in 2008

Posted by lukems at 6/2/2008 3:14 PM PDT

Industry-focused Web site Gamasutra published a giant-sized interview with Artist Michael Zak, Engineer Chris Butcher and the man you know as Ske7ch.

In a lengthy piece titled "Bungie in 2008: Reflecting on Halo 3, Moving Beyond," Gamasutra chats with three Bungie staffers about their roles on Halo 3's development. In an interview conducted during the 2008 Game Developer Conference Gamasutra chats with  Michael Zak, Chris Butcher and Brian Jarrard walk through some of Halo 3's development, talk a bit about the separation from Microsoft and how things have changed (and stayed the same) at Bungie since we parted ways with Microsoft.

Seafaring Through the Past

From the darkness of the distant past, a long last classic resurfaces. Note: "Classic" should be taken with a grain of salt.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing new about this video - other than when I found it - I hadn't seen it before. Also, looking around at my coworkers, this is a crazy revelation on how independence has really changed Bungie. I mean, look at these dudes' hair. Granted, Paul Russel's excuse is something about him experimenting as an Artist with a method-acting equivalent with his mane of Piratical hair. Everyone experiments at some point, I suppose.

Fair Warning: There is a debate about the correct implementation of "Mermaid Ho -blam!-es" and a surfable wave  in Marty's hair that may sear an imprint into your mind.

S'Pht Hits Fan: Earth Doomed

The Weekly World News, that bastion of truth and wisdom and freedom of the press, is reporting a disturbing news story. Earthlings are collecting the flags of Alien Nations. Presumably trading and acquiring them via places like eBay, without giving thought to where these flags come from. Especially disturbing is the most prized flag of all.

Click the image below to see what is considered the jewel in the crown of alien flag collecting. I can only hope that nobody in deep space is watching this.

First it was AppleTalk, then it was TCP/IP... now AlephOne, that loveable little Marathon engine upgrade, is getting in-game chat and server browsing functions. In short, this means players will now be able to sound off without a microphone and browse a master list to see who's playing what and when. The end result is less time spent trying to find people in AIM chatrooms and more time spent watching their mangled corpses flying across Thunderdome. The new features are still in testing, but if you're an intrepid Marathoner you can grab the latest build here and give it a spin. Now eat it, vid bois!

Marathon 10th Anniversary Contest Extended!

Reiginko writes:

You know that sweet contest the moderators are holding in recognition of Marathon's 10th birthday? No? Well, okay, anyway, you have an extension, which is lucky considering you didn't even know it existed in the first place!

On the 21st of December 1994, Marathon was released to the world, which was never the same again. To some people. Anyway, on the 21st of December 2004, with very little fanfare, the 10th Anniversary Marathon Contest was released to the world, which pretty much stayed the same this time to everyone. The original deadline of the contest was the 11th of January, however, in light of the fact that only about four people realised that there actually was a contest going on, the contest is being extended to February 9. You can find a lot more information about this contest in this forum post. - Reiginko

The Bungie.net 10th Anniversary Marathon Contest!

Posted by SketchFactor at 12/20/2004 9:38 PM PST

Reiginko writes:

Aside from being the summer/winter solstice, depending on your hemisphere of choice, today also happens to be the 10th birthday of Marathon's release, and the start of the greatest series of games ever created in the long history of this noble art. In honour of this momentous occasion, your faithful Bungie.net mods have created a chance for all you fans to increase your Pile o' Stuff.

In honour of the 10th birthday of the greatest series of games of all time, your long-suffering B.net Moderator team has organised a chance for you to win a metric heap of Really Cool Stuff™. This contest is unlike any other ever held, as it is in fact a hyper-contest with three completely different separate categories: [*]First off, we’re holding an essay contest. It has often been asserted by many people that Marathon should be included in the syllabi of English courses at both secondary and tertiary level. Well, okay, replace “often” with “at least once”, and “many people” with “just Reiginko”, and we might be getting somewhere. But that is so beside the point. Marathon and its story is such a rich topic that it’s criminal to not write an essay about it. Anyway, somebody already beat us to it (look for “NoiVad”), so you can’t blame us for starting this one. If you still aren’t sold on the idea, just remember that essays are only boring and stupid when they’re actually about boring and stupid things. [*]If analytical writing isn’t quite your thang, but you still fancy yourself (Narcissist!) quite the wordsmith, perhaps you’ll take a shine to our poetry contest. It’s basically against The Law™ to not hold a poetry contest about Marathon, since Marathon poetry contests in one form or another have been going on since the W’rkncacnter first swam on the surface of Lh’owon’s sun, so we reckon it’s pretty natural to hold one today. We’ll accept any sort of poem. I think Yoozel wanted to include a rule that we’ll only accept neo-pre-metaphysical flea poems, but that would have been silly. [*]Finally, if poetry isn’t your best suit either, but you do know how to tickle the humerus, maybe you should have a peek at our joke contest. Long-time readers of the Letters to the Webmaster will remember that your mum’s favourite drunkard-in-a-gorilla-suit held a similar contest for his correspondents a while back. This time, however, you won’t have to follow the rather esoteric rule that the punchline had to be “frog blast the vent core” (and anyway, one of the winners of that contest didn’t even bother to follow that rule). For more information, including rules, prizes and some handy hints, check out this[/urll] forum thread.
