Sharing is the basis
for all File sharing networks.
Without it no one gets files and the program is rather useless.
eDonkey does a few things to help ensure that everyone shares,
and to improve everyone's downloading experience:
1. Files are segmented into sections for distributed downloading
amongst different users.
2. In progress downloads are always shared. As soon as one
section of a file is downloaded it is shared on the network
for others.
3. Upload Ratios, in order to download at high speed, you
must upload at a speed greater than 10K/s.
4. Horde. The horde system ensures that people who give
a lot of upload speed will get fast download speeds in return.
Sharing
Files
The Shared view allows you to interact with your computer
in two key ways, the List view and the Directory view. Changing
which files are shared is done through the directory view,
while creating links to those files, as well as seeing a
complete list of what is shared is done through the List
view.
Before sharing files
Make yourself aware of the laws in your region that apply
to you with regards to copyright and file sharing. Please
read the Files section for some
details on laws regarding file sharing.
A Few
tips
1. Don't share your \windows or \winnt directories, or the
directory that contains your windows swap file as it will
present a major security risk
2. If your going to share large unique files (ones that
you're bringing new onto the network) please be prepared
to share them for quite a while as it will take a while
for the entire file to propagate into the network.
3. Overall, it is a better choice from a network point of
view to share a few files for a long time, rather than a
lot of files for a short period of time.
4. Leave files that you have downloaded shared as long as
you can to help others download those same files you are
enjoying.
1. Shared
List: Here eDonkey presents a complete list of all
the files shared on your computer. The majority of the files
listed will be ones from directories marked by you to share.
Though files currently being downloaded will also be listed.
If you wish to tell a friend about a file, or place a link
to it on a website, simply right click on a file, and select
'Copy link to clipboard'. You may now paste it in any normal
HTML page, and any user running eDonkey will be able to
click on that link to download that exact file.
2. Share
Tree: This view initially shows the drives on your
computer in a view similar to Windows Explorer. Clicking
on the plus sign beside any drive or folder opens it up,
and shows all sub folders. To share a folder simply click
the circle beside the folder name. This will share that
folder. If you wish to share all sub folders hold down the
Ctrl key while clicking.
3. Apply
Button: This applies the changes you have made in
the share tree. eDonkey will now calculate a unique hash
value for each new file shared. This may take a while depending
on how many new files have been shared, and the speed of
the computer.
4. Refresh
Button: This adds any files to the shared list that
have been placed in the shared directories since you last
started eDonkey. It also removes any files from the shared
list that are no longer in the shared directories.
5. Show
Files Checkbox: If checked the shared tree will also
list the files that are in each directory.
