TRIALIST Adam Smith is eager to impress Wrexham FC manager Brian Little and earn himself a contract.
Adam Smith, released by Chesterfield, started a trial with the Reds this week and played nearly 80 minutes of Tuesday's 0-0 draw against Crewe Alexandra.

Having seen a similar trial at Darlington come to nothing, striker Smith, equally at home on either wing, is hoping to do enough during his time at The Racecourse to extend his stay.

"The games I played at Darlington went well," said Smith.

"Manager Dave Penney was honest with me but he said I was not what they were looking for at the moment.

"I am just trying to impress the gaffer here and hopefully be part of a squad pushing for promotion. I'm here trying to earn a contract and get something sorted.

"I am sure I can add something to the squad."

Smith could not speak highly enough of the set-up at Wrexham and said everyone is focused on mounting a promotion challenge when the new Blue Square Premier season kicks off next month: "I am very impressed with the way things are run here. It is very professional," he said.

"They are a brilliant bunch of lads. I know Nat Brown from when I was on loan at Lincoln last season and we have had a few tussles playing against each other over the years!

"You get a good vibe here. You can tell with the way Brian Little talks that they want to do something and put last season behind them.

"It is a better set-up than Chesterfield and they are in the league.

"Unfortunately, Wrexham are in the Blue Square Premier but it does not feel like that. It is a big club.

"Everyone is determined to get back up and it is very positive here. I would definitely put money on Wrexham going up."

Smith, who played the first half in attack against Crewe and the second on the left flank, is hoping to overcome a slight hamstring problem so he can play tomorrow.

Little is fielding one side in a behind-closed-doors friendly in the morning and then taking a different team to Colwyn Bay tomorrow afternoon.

"I thought it went alright against Crewe but I was a bit restricted with my running as I had a slight hamstring strain," added Smith.

"I have already had a few games at Darlington – three in a week where I played two 90 minutes and one half-an-hour – so I am happy with my fitness.

"I will let the hamstring settle and, fingers crossed, I have got a chance to play tomorrow, but I will be back training here on Monday."
