Gareloi

Gareloi, Aleutian Islands

Gareloi is the largest (at 67 km² in area) and northernmost island of the Delarof Islands — a small group that sits at western end of the Andreanof Islands. The island faces the Amchitka Pass on the west across to the Rat Islands (with Semisopochnoi located 94 km to the west-northwest) and the Tanaga Pass on the east across to the island of Tanaga, 35 km distant. The other islands of the Delarof group — Amagtignak, Ilak, Kavalga, Ogliuga, Skagul, the Tags, Tanadak, Ugidak, Ulak, and Unalga — are located 16 km to the south.

The island measures 9.7 km length and 8 km in width, consisting largely of the impressive volcanic peak of Mt. Gareloi that rises to 1,573 m. There are two summits at the mountains top (easily discernible in the image) that are separated by a narrow saddle.
