Semisopochnoi

Semisopochnoi, Aleutian Islands

Semisopochnoi sits at the southern end of the Bowers Ridge — a submarine feature that extends away from the main line of the Aleutians in a long curving arc to the northwest. It is a member of the Rat Islands group, being located 56 km to the northeast of Amchitka.

The island is oval shaped, with dimensions of 19 km by 16 km, covering an area of 224 km². The island consists of a number of volcanic peaks that form a ring around an older 8 km wide caldera. These include the twin-peaked, 1,221 m high, Anvil Peak (the highest point on the island) in the north, the triple-peaked Mt. Cerberus (774 m) and the 855 m high Sugarloaf Peak. Semisopochnoi forms the largest volcano of the western Aleutian Islands.
