Semichi Islands

Semichi Islands, Aleutian Islands

Together with the larger islands of Attu and Agattu, the three small islands of the Semichi group (Alaid, Nizki and Shemya) comprise the Near Islands Group. In this image of the far-western Aleutians, Attu is on the left, Agattu on the right and the three Semichi Islands at upper-right.

The three closely aligned islands form a short chain of 21 km in length, located 29 km southeast from the eastern extremity of Attu and 28 km northeast from Agattu. In addition to the three main islands, there are a number of small islets. Among the largest of these with names are Hammerhead Island and Lotus Island, both of which are located within the Shemya Pass between Shemya and Niziki. Dozens of smaller islets and offshore rocks around each of the main islands complete the Semichi group.

Shemya, at the eastern end of the Semichi chain, is the largest island of the group at 15.3 km² in area. It is separated from the central island of Nizki by the 2.6 km wide Shemya Pass; Nizki and Alaid are often connected to one another via a sandbar at low tide.
