Kanaga

Kanaga, Aleutian Islands

With an area 367 km² and measuring 48 km in length with average widths of between 6 and 13 km, Kanaga is the fifth largest island of the Andreanof Islands group. The island is located near the western end of the group, lying between the larger islands of Adak (12 km to the east, across the Adak Strait) and Tanaga (7 km to the west, across the Kanaga Pass).

The island rises to its greatest elevation of 1,307 m at the summit of the conical-shaped Kanaga Volcano (prominent in the image above), which sits at the northern end of the island. Also visible in the image is the ring-like ridge that encircles the volcano on the landward side. This is the remains of the ancient Kanaton caldera, the walls of which reach a height of 760 m. Also visible is the lake that occupies the southeastern portion of the caldera floor.
