Herbert Island

Herbert Island, Aleutian Islands

Herbert Island, an island of the Islands of Four Mountains group, sits 5 km off the southwestern tip of Chuginadak, from which it is separated from by the Chuginadak Pass; the island of Yunaska is located 25 km to the southwest. (Chuginadak is visible at lower right of the above image, with Carlisle Island at upper right).

Measuring 10 km across, the conical Herbert Island rises steeply to a height of 1,280 m. The truncated summit is topped by a 2 km wide caldera — one of the most impressive of such formations to be found within the Aleutian Islands. No historical eruptions have been recorded from the Herbert Volcano.
