Sanak Islands

Sanak Islands, Aleutian Islands

Situated in the western regions of the Gulf of Alaska, the sanak Islands comprise a small group islands and rocks located 50 km off the southwestern coast of the Alaska Peninsula and southeast from Cape Pankof on Unimak Island (at top-left). The group is dominated by its largest islands of Sanak (with an area of 127 km²) and Caton Island. Sanak measures around 21 km in length and has a maximum width of 6.4 km. The remaining islands are all tightly clustered around Sanak. Vegetation on the islands is dominated by grasses, and in particular by the Lyme grass (Elymus arenarius).

Together with the Simeonof Islands and the Semidi Islands, the Sanak Islands form part of the Semidi and Simenof Wilderness Areas.
